WTB Early 911 Instruments
Hi
For my next project I'd like a set of early 911 instruments, Tach, Speedo, Combo Gauge, Are these the same as a 356C? TIA Neven |

nope. They are different. The 912 speedo might have been the same though. By the way, do you guys down under (and over) drive in KPH or MPH? If KPH, you are better off looking for the speedo in Europe.

Thanks
How are they different? Do they look the same, We drive in KPH now but as there was no NZ version of early cars they are usually english imports and are in MPH, I'd have to check on what Aussie cars have Neven |

In 66', they only came in Kilometers, even tho mine is an american car. Is this why you are looking for early gauges? I'm not sure when they started putting MPH on. Of course, being on another continent, there should be plenty of different choices. But not sure what year car you are fitting this in?

Hey Brian, I got your email, will respond later tonight.
Actually, the early cars had MPH in the USA.

Jon;
white numbers on a black field indicates '68 to '73. your guages may have date stamps on the back, either stamped into the metal or rubber stamped in a blue triangle. Brett Johnson devotes nearly 2 1/2 pages to early 911 guages. Neven's request for "...early" is not clear in this regard. HTH best jerry

Neve,
I believe you are looking for one of these rare birds. I paid $200 for mine on Ebay last year and the another $300 to have cleaned up and rebuilt.

Just to clarify, here is a KPH speedo from a 1965 356. Compare the differences. Biggest one though is that the 356 speedo only goes to 200kph. It's those pesky extra 2 cylinders that make all the difference - Otherwise we would all be driving 912's!!!

Is that tach for sale? I think from what you guys are saying I need early 911 (pre 68) to get a speedo above 120Mph (200Kph). Ideally I'd like a 250KPH speedo Neven |

Neven;
i'd consider an offer on the tach. did you get the pix of the 904 fuel cap ? also, correction on the date stamp on the tach. that should read 1.66 vs. 11.66. best jerry

Neven,
Just to clarify on your previous posting, what is being said is NOT that 1968 and newer speedometers only go to 120 (200kph). All 911 speedometers go to 150mph(250kpm). Instead, the 1968 and newer gauges are cosmetically different. The pre-1968 gauges have chrome bezels and green lettering. The 1968 gauges and newer have black plastic bezels and white lettering. All of the pictures with gauges on this thread are from 1967 models and older. By the way, if you are planning on running an upgarded iginition system which uses a CD box (Bosch, MSD, Crane, etc) chances are good that you will either need an adapter kit or need to have the tachometer rebuilt/recalibrated - don't ask me how I know. North Hollywood Speedometer can rebuild/recalibrate an original early model tachometer for $150 plus any cosmetic restoration. All 1969 and newer Porsche 911 models used a CD box so no recalibration is necessary for 1969 and newer tachometers that use a CD box. Good luck. |
