Size error on back of 8x16 Fuchs

I removed my set of 7 & 8 x16 Fuchs from my 88 Carrera today. They are white in color matched to the car and have been on the car since 1999 and I've had two sets of tires on them. Today, I decided to put the 6 & 7 x 16's back on the car and removed the other ones. What I found shocked me a little. One of the wheels was marked 8 x 16, but the other is marked 8 x 15, however, i've been running 16" tires on them since 1999. My only guess is that one was mismarked (stamped wrong) when it was produced because if it was a true 8 x 15, I would not have been able to mount the 16" tire. Anyone ever seen this type of anomoly before on a Fuchs alloy?

never heard of mis stamped fuchs before but anything is possible I guess. Any chance it's just a bad stamp? I've seen some wheels where it was hard to read the stamp.
8x15s and 8x16s are very different in the design of the outside ring area so I'd guess you would have noticed if the two wheels were different.

I've seen lots of stamps that were partial or incomplete just because the die didn't strike the wheel well. Are you sure it isn't a "6" that lacks the lower left part?

There was a recent thread that showed a mis-stamped Fuch. IIRC, it was stamped 8 x 15 when it was actually an 8 x 16.

jorian, that's what I found. I had the guy at the tire shop and my wife confirm it. I've had a lot of Fuchs wheels on my cars in 38 years, but this anomoly takes the cake. I've wire brushed it, used thinner and other cleaning fluids, but it says 8 x 15. As I said before, I know it's mismarked or I would not have been able to put a 16" tire on it and have it work properly. Thanks for the comeback guys.

That is one strange thing! However, if there were 8x15 you could tell right away since the 15's lip have a dip which goes up into the paddles and the 16's does not. If the lips are the same, then it was a misprint from factory. Who knows...

Oh, okay I may have messed up. Anyway it is very interesting when crazy things like a misstamp or other thing makes you go; Hmmmmm??

Wil Ferch 05-25-2006 07:14 AM

Not beating anyone up.... just clarifying that minting errors were reported before...therefore maybe not so unusual......

So, Ron, are your 16 x 8 wheels for sale? I have an 85 with the original 16 x 6 and 16 x 7, and want to upgrade. Let me know... Thanks.

Ron McAtee 05-25-2006 07:58 AM

Spooty, they will be , but there are 3 ahead of you. I have had surgery recently so i can't get around well yet or I would have pictures posted. I will be selling the 7's & 8's as a set since they are painted white. I already have a set of 6's & 7's on the car. Thanks for inquiring.
