How do i know that this hood badge is original?
Please see this link to EBAY. Is this original or reproduction?
I don't want to get burned, but looks beautiful. Thanks

HI,
Well, I think this board is ok for the question... but perhaps the technical one is better. My input is that it's original. I haven't yet seen a reproduction where the gold is "flat" in terms of sheen. Repro's that I have seen are far too shiny. When supplied new the badge had a flat gold finish, I've seen NOS ones, and currently own several mint low mileage ones that I've purchased over MANY years, and all of those are flat in finish on the gold part. This is also supported by pictures in Christophorus from that time period. Note that there is a guy offering up some new badges that have been "patina'd", but he's yet to get the gold part correct. Eric

Ok,
I'm going to retract based on his previous feedback and previous sales. HOWEVER! the gold is the correct color (at least on my screen), and it is "flat" in finish, which is how it should be. cheers, Eric

Although the auction is over... I thought that originals did NOT have concentric rings on the base of the mounting studs. This, I thought, was a tell-tale sign of a badge being a reproduction as the originals all had smooth bases. In addtion, all the original studs were soldered on; and not too neatly so there was typically solder around the base of the stud overflowing onto the rear of the badge. I don't see any solder on this badge and I do see concentric rings.
Ron

This is the back of an original (off my 71):
[IMG] ![]() You can see the solder. The black crap was previous owners idea of a good rtv "fix" to help hold it to the hood instead of spending the quarter on nuts |
