JUST FOUND A 68 912 Mostly complete w/ engine + transmission
911R guys !!!! attention
It turns out my neighbor has a Long hood 912 and I never really much paid attention to it. I was thinking it was a big rust bucket missing it's engine and trans. I finally took the time to walk over today to inspect it. what I found was a AWESOME 1968 912 Vin# 12820760 Non Sun roof Aluminum trim through out the dash face Vin plate on front hood latch + under smugglers box The car was sanded down for a restoration but not finished. Original paint visible on some locations was a dark blue Original 5 gauges ( adjustment is below cluster) Original steering wheel (big huge buss like wheel with 4 spokes) Original Matching Fuchs with center caps Original glass (VERY NICE SHAPE) Original shift knob Original bumpers Bumper trim LONG HOOD There is a very Tiny bit of rust in front of the gas tank but Ive seen alot worse Gas tank looks like it's made of aluminum or some other material since there is virtually no rust and looks bright I looked under the car and only saw rust holes on the driver side rear floor pan and only in 1 section. the rest of the car looks rust free. Engine tin was powder coated Solex carbs are there engine looks 100% complete As I said the car came in 100% complete. 901 transmission is also present I'm not 100% sure the engine turns I haven't tried. NO CRASH DAMAGE that I can see nor repairs....its almost down to bare metal. 61,566 miles on odometer I have no idea what the car is worth yet.... all I know is that it won't be a give away. I've researched and found original engines selling for $4000 alone! If anyone is interested or wants to help my friend sell this car let me know. I have some very crued Iphone photos that I will post later on And should have it all pulled out and layed out next week. He has recently (last year) invested $2500 in new parts not used. I think it would be wise to sell the engine and chassis separate ??? |

I really don't want to part the car but I doubt anyone will pay what he wants for the car.
It really is worth more in pieces. most likely the 912 will be sold in pieces but not completely parted out to preserve some original aspects for the next owner. This would really make an awesome long hood R model car for an enthusiast on the budget Chassis Fuchs, Gauges, most of the interior, all body panels, electrical, glass various interior bits + trim + Steering wheel Carpet is gone, seats are reupholstered (sold separately) Engine complete with powder coated tin + solex carbs and all necessary items Transmission 901 I think it's a 5 speed need to verify Then a few misc items to round off the total cost of the car. after looking at the iphone photos I'm going to wait and pull the car out this weekend give it a good clean then post clean photos. No justice is made by the terrible photos. Examples of closed items, this car has the same parts Steering wheel Fuchs 15x6 (but maybe they are 7s ?) Same grill We will be pulling the car out this weekend, dusting it off and really getting a solid price for the whole car and as parts. Need to check the engine to see if it's free. Transmission numbers....ect Not giving it away, but it will cheaper than what ebay sells individual stuff for. Last edited by Blackbyrd; 04-05-2012 at 11:34 PM.. |

The Chassis is located in Los Angeles
I have a price in mind but with out photos it somewhat pointless. We will be asking $6000 for the whole lot I showed some photos to a friend and gave him the price and he seems to be very interested in what he saw. Id post the photos but some are too quick to judge so Id rather get the right shots out. I will most likely sell the car in pieces 3-5 lots to achieve the price my friend wants for the car. Like I said he already invested $2500 into it + the price of the car, It's only fair he gets his money back. The engine and trans alone should be worth $4500-5000 It's a shame the car is a matching numbers car. (I think) the lil 912 is full of nice parts that aren't cheap, I know some might be expecting a $1000 rolling chassis with a gas heater in the trunk and gas burner wheels in mint shape, but this isn't the case. My friend/neighbor needs to recoup his money from the project |

from someone who buys and sells 912 parts all the time, a running engine is worth about 2500-3000 in unknown history/condition. a used gear box is about 500 - 900 depending on history too..
4k is very optimistic...

This Car seems like it has a lot of potential, I would advise the seller to sell it as a complete matching number (if it is) car. It will hold it's value. Keep these cars as they should be.

I think your prices are enthusiast prices but not what they are actually selling for. $2500-3000 sounds about right for a good non running unknown history engine In the past I have sold 2 912 engines for $4000 each in unknown condition. Both went outside of the country The transmission are selling for $750-1000 (some $1500!) from what I gathered so your price isn't too far off. The chassis has really nice parts Clean matching non chromed fuchs as well as previously mentioned parts. Id love to see the car go in one piece but the asking price will be $6000 Not my choice just what my friend needs to get his money out of the car. Even then I think it will pull in more if sold in pieces |

car will be sold as parts.... not as one piece
Good Idea though, I think I will put a car for sale ad still feeling bad about selling it in pieces though... Id really like to see it go to 1 owner who wants to restore it I will talk to my friend about negotiating a good price on it Last edited by Blackbyrd; 04-06-2012 at 03:55 PM.. |

Glad youre an expert. how many engines have you sold? how many cars have you parted out? how many 912s have you actually owned?
enthusiest prices? so.. youre a professional selling to professionals? who do you think youre selling to? no one would buy a non running 912 engine for 2-3K. thats assanine. glad you're an expert, we need more of them around here.

First off I'm not a 912 expert far from it actually. the only experience: I have sold 3 other 912s projects and a slew of parts...many that I still have. I've driven them for days on end but never really felt my path was with a 912. Also helped a friend restore a 912 with plenty of bloody knuckles models I sold 1 66 2 67 1 3 gauge 1 5 gauge I studied as much as I could about them on forums, Porsche books, hearing stories at Porsche swapmeets and general internet surfing for hours on end. I sold 2 912 engines both not running for $4000 that is what they went for! they weren't frozen I just didn't turn them on. both engines left the country 1 to Germany 1 to Mexico I mean no disrespect sometimes my vocabulary isn't the best. by "enthusiast pricing" I mean pricing set for: private sales maybe a friend to friend, forum pricing, just general NON ebay or second hand shop pricing. for example 1 person might sell a 16x9 Fuchs for $250 "enthusiast price" because 1. doesn't know the value 2. selling it to a friend 3. forum find, needs it gone I know 20 people would jump on it and say "me me, I'm next in line" when in fact that wheel is easily worth $800-1000 ? Market price You can't rule out no one would buy a non running engine for $2000-3000 because I have seen it done time and time again. heck a quick search of craigslist already proved my theory This guy must be crazy asking $1700 for an engine that isn't complete and in pieces Porsche 912 Engine parts not bad $1000 for a junked/rebuildable engine ? Porsche 912 Motor Engine Partsheaven a shop known for its awesome reputation and GREAT service $5700 !!! for a 912 engine with no description not complete undesirable engine I'm not a 912 expert I just watch the market. My heart doesn't lay with 912 but rather SC/Carreras and RS Americas ..... those are the cars where I can say I'm a fanatic. Judging by your awesome blog spot Bound to Cover Just a Little More Ground that I surfed through (and encourage others to do so) you are truly a 912 enthusiast and I appreciate your comments and suggestions. sorry my last post was a bit harsh.. was a rough day at work and i took it out on you a bit.
A lot of people put stuff up for crazy prices on ebay, but that doesnt mean they ever sell at that price. for example i saw a really poor condition hood badge for $600.. far from the real market of 4-500 for a perfect one and less than 200 for one that poor.. if you get 5K for an engine, let me know, as i have a 67 i may be parting out soon. but i have sold two engines in the last couple of years for 2500 and 3K... and i dont do many people favors with my pricing, always fair market value. You should go to 912bbs.org and do some research on some stuff there.. also recomend selling parts here and on early 911s since early 911s use the same parts. do your homework on which years are interchangeable for which parts, and also realize a 912E and a 912 have very few parts in common (and engines are no where near the same). thanks for the kind words about the blog and best of luck!

Unless I missed it in an earlier post, the car you're selling is not a "Long Hood" car, but in fact it's a short hood car. Only the 1969 was a "long hood" car. Regardless, good luck with its sale.
