The general internet review on HF and equivalent Chinese-made dig. calipers is quite good. Hmmm. HF? Doesn't sound right. Maybe their manufacturing tolerances were aimed too high or the electronic module they source is no brainer dead nuts.
However, as overseas manufacturing goes, I'm waiting for them to increase the profit margin by decreasing the existing quality content in their $6 product. Better get them while they're good before they release the $3 versions with bamboo jaws. ![]() Sherwood |

I am a hack mechanic so Snap on was a luxury and I settled for Craftsman. Had a problem with a Craftsman ratchet..Made in USA, took it in to sears and they tried to replace it with Made in CHINA..No way
In fact much of the Craftsman line is now China Sourced..I have had few problems with HF tools and when there was a problem they replaced/refunded no questions other than is something wrong with it.

HF; "they replaced/refunde no questions...." You do realize that HF tools are imported, mostly/entirely from China? Sherwood |

calipers
Home Depot has electronic calipers for approx. $30.00 that read in mm, decimal inches, and actual fractions.

I Wonder

When buying measuring tools you should try to stick to brand names. Torque wrenches verniers calipers. You usually get what you pay for. Good tools are an investment. I once had a torque wrench cheap and was torqueing main bearing caps. Suddenly the bolt was getting easier to torque. Backed off and removed and bolt had streched. Both went in garbage. Wrench had lost its tolerances. Now I have a Snap on. Expensive but worth every penny. Just my 2 cents worth. Goodluck thanks rob.

The only way to tell if the Craftsman is USA is look at the package as the tool itself has a letter code on it..in other words if the Craftsman tool doesnt say USA it aint ..

on a yearly basis, or it can do the same thing as a cheap one. As far a the HF digital calipers, they may be cheap, but are surprisingly quite good. I have checked them with machinist control blocks and they read right on. However, I do realize that many HF tools are of questionable quality though!

The HF calipers have worked good for me too. Had them checked by metrology and they were right on, good enough for most garage work. So cheap you can have 3-4 of them spread around. Basement, shop, garage and glove box. I also have 4 of the cheep grinders from HF and they work just fine for garage work. Keeps me from changing discs all the time.

Give me an old Mitutoyo or Starrett dial vernier any day. I was never a fan of the digital units and as long as you keep the dial units free of dirt they last forever and can be re-calibrated far easier. I have two gauge block sets a basic 9 piece and an 81 piece Starrett I always verify the gauges are spot on before measuring.

FWIW, the abrasives at HF are understandably cheaper, but they're also relative crap - referring specifically to their flap discs and applies to their sandpaper as well. If you're doing anything serious and continuous, I suggest investing in higher quality domestic brands or equivalent. Their are several websites that list HF tools under different categories; e.g. okay, not okay, dangerous, crap, like hammers = okay; surgical instruments = not okay. ![]() Sherwood |
