912 engine
My very nice 912 67 has been fully restored following the golden rules: first body, then interior and then engine and transmission
Now is time to look at the engine. It has a very good 68 engine that has a lot of power, great compression but ... leaks oil too much from the case and after a number of visit to the doctor (the mechanic actually), and $$$ on it , the diagnosis was: use it as it is or go for an "open the case and see what needs to be done to make it like new" I'm thinking to take the second option but I would like to have a proper 67 engine installed then. I would like some advice about the two ideas that I have in mind: - find a decent 912 67 engine, rebuild it and then put it in the car and trade for the leaking 68 engine - find a decent 912 67 case (3rd pieces included) 916/36 that has a serial number close to my car VIN, open the good 68 engine (916/39) and use it as a donor of what is good inside and outside (carb, oil stuff, coil, crankshaft, ...), replacing what needs to replaced. I can then trade the 68 case and what is left I fear that the first idea is more expensive than the second but I don't know if the second is feasible. I have no idea if all the stuff that are in and out of a 68 engine are the same of a 67 engine and if I can build a good engine from this frankestin approach last option I simply open the 68 and rebuild it (not my favourite at all) many thanks for any advice  Gianmarco |
The 68 is a 67 engine with the exception of the smog pump and 060 retarding distributor. If you change the engine. You will loose the matching numbers for that car. Unless it has already been done.
Unless you are standing there and micing the case until you find one that is Standard. You will not know if it is better than the one you already have. Also unless the case, you already have, is cracked. You can have it put back standard. One of the best for head and case work is Ollies. They have moved from southern Cal to either Arizona or New Mexico. You can find them advertised in the PCA Pano. One of the biggest problems, now days, is finding the main bearings and the sizes you will need. Standard/standard is the ideal. The combo sizes of 2nd and 3rd over and under can be a nightmare. I understand that someone may be making mains again. However, I am not sure about the quality and how many different combo sizes they would be making. I would have my case put back to standard and buy a new forge crank. When building a Porsche engine. The money you save on the build is the part that breaks. The weakest part of a Porsche engine is the crank and bearings |
