912e engine sheet metal question
 

Hi--

At the rear of the driver's side engine sheet-metal there is a 13 mm hole and a 100 mm long slot. Can anyone tell me what the purpose of the hole and the slot is?

It's very simple; some of the factory people got to test drive it, and the consensus following was that it deserved an exclamation point milled into the free area. {Pardon me, I only wanted to bother remembering my login info for the privilege of raving about how cool these are. The only thing I can compare it to is a helicopter, in which case I am a passenger not accorded any controls.}

That hole could be for the thermostat flap wire?
The slot.... Is it above the alternator? Or close to it ?for checking/adjusting the belt tension?
I simply don't remember anymore.... Haven't opened the the engine bay in my E for several years... No worries, haven't driven it either!

The hole and slot are not shown in FWBowen's picture. The hole could have been drilled in the sheet metal after manufacture. The slot runs along the car's longitudinal axis between the laterally stamped ribs and the fan shroud. It appears to have been stamped in during the manufacturing process. It has rolled edges and is square and perpendicular to other sheet metal features.

Can anyone help me add a picture? I've checked my Control Panel but I can't determine how to add photos or albums.

Could it be AC-compressor bracket hole?
I somehow recall it beeing somewhere around that area in my car, before I dumped the whole system....

Thanks for the observation. I've never seen an air conditioned 912e so I don't know what it looks like but the slot sure looks like it was done during the sheetmetal manufacturing process.

Yes, it is a '77 targa with 912e running gear, 2.0 L engine and D-jet FI. The P.O. couldn't afford to rebuild the magnesium case 2.7 L so the car sat for a long time while he tried to put a type IV engine in it. I picked it up and went through the whole car while installing the 912e parts.

Here is a photo that you won’t see everyday. A 2.0 L. engine with a D-jet in a ’77 targa body.
