Personally I use whatever was in the trans before. I only switch to synthetic after a full rebuild and for track use. The school of thought is that the syncros set in based on the coefficient of friction and there is a good difference between dino and synthetic. Many a mile has been driven on dino and the early tranys were made to work with them.

Swepco 201.... made a noticable difference over whatever was in there before (Unknown black goo)
Whether or not it was the simple fact it was new stuff or that Swepco has additives in it that help, I can't say. Morrie 67 912 Coupe |

sjd,
Swepco seems to be a good tranny oil for our transmission. But I think any name brand hypoid 80-90w gear lube should be okay. I think what is important is to use a good brand and change it on a regular schedule. Black goo running in the tranny can't be good for the tranny. Since Swepco runs about $40-$50 a gallon, a suggestion that I followed was to change the old tranny oil with a regular brand name oil, run it for 200-300 miles and then change that out replacing with Swepco. Then use Swepco as the regular tranny oil when changing it. I hope that helps. Jones Low 69-912 00-Box |
