Shift Coupler
Hey out there, I would like to know it anyone has ever driven the pin from between the bushings from the rear coupler without breaking it. Mine had some slop so I bought new plastic bushings instead of forking over $60 for a rebuilt. Then the fun started. No luck with hammer and punch in vise so I heated the unit in the oven at 500. No luck. Part had a stamp from 79. Car is a 66. Once the alum was destroyed I was able to finally drive the pin out. Now I'll have to pay the core charge and buy a rebuilt. I didn't buy the porsche rebuild because it had almost as much slop as my used one did. Oh well. Should be ready to go for a C-note. Later DG

Heat the body and cool the pin then press it out, it is tight but it will come out. don't feel too bad you are not the first person to break one.

Hello,
I supported one side of the alum. part with a deep socket that would allow the pin to pass into it and from the other side a socket on the other side that was smaller than the pin,and sandwhiched the whole thing in a vice.By slowly clamping down, you have complete control, and it just about jumps put of there, and no heat is required:D Good luckSmileWavy |
Shift Coupler
Thanks Steve F and Green 912, I took the parts and pieces to my trailer builder friend who's milling me a new piece from a 2 by 2 inch of solid steel. Yes it will be heavy but the new part should outlast us all. Parts-house wanted 60 for rebuilt one and 40 core charge. I'll pay 100 for a piece that's bomb proof. Wish I was smart enough to think of the socket method. Heat was not the answer. Thanks again . DG
