Right Otto, The outer ring will not works. I think that someone, once broke off the tab and drilled a hole for an attachment screw. However, the VW unit will fit the 356. Several have used them.
I have two OEM new US complete, in the box, Headlight assemblies. That came with my car, with some other US requires parts. However, I will never used them. Mine was originally a Euro delivery (Danmark) 912 and I have kept it that way. |

Indeed Jaems, they fit the 356 Porsche. It confirms in a way the relationship - as with so many parts - between the Beetle and the 356. The 356 also has the more bold rims like the VW. I should have been more accurate and have written "Porsche 911/912".
Keep the parts Jaems, they are part of the history of your adorable "silver bird"! @Fixer The lenses will fit the 911/912 H4 units, but I don't know if they are marked with "VW" or just an unknown brand - for sure not with Hella or Bosch. But still a pleasant priced alternative. Otto |

Great info guys!
I originally thought I'd have to shell out mucho dinero for H1's with city lights but now I see I can get this for much less. I already have the two inner parts, screws, and one chrome ring. Because I'm a complete nerd, information junkie I read auto safety reports and there is a direct correlation betwixt daytime running lights (euro city lights) and the avoidance of accidents. Hence, I'm interested in city lights to keep my little car from getting clobbered by a SUV. For anyone needing new mounting bolts or chrome rings, Eric Linden at Auto Foreign makes reproductions in the correct chrome brass. Bolts are $20 and two rings are $80. I'm still hunting the VW reflector parts. And because every thread needs pictures, here's a swb car with our headlights of choice doing what we all love... Stinkin' picture failed.

I did similar experiments, including reflectors, with (replica) VW parts here in Europe. I guess they sell parts here from the same (Chinese? ...) source as in the US.
Looking forward to the results! Otto |

Clean degrease them carefully before you assemble the light. Otherwise you will see every fingerprint on them and dust will stick to the glass. And do not use these old seals!

Puma,
If you are looking for the reflectors only, you can buy those from this guy in Germany. http://www.daddys-carparts.com/en/electrical-lightning/porsche-911-912-930/587/headlight-h4-reflectors-for-porsche-911-930-964 or ebay from the same guy. Check Jaems post #27 all the parts needed are there Last edited by donporfi; 10-13-2016 at 02:28 PM.. |

Following up as I started this post
I originally thought about installing the Euro-look headlights with the looks that I love. The price was a bit staggering (at least around $350 each) and my imperfect car is not ever going to recoup this investment. So, as suggested by this forum, I purchased a pair of H-4 headlights from our host as well as some great relays and seals for the standard ice cream scoops. Wow! What a difference over the original sealed beam originals! Parts cost for both was around $140 and I can now see at night! Thanks to all.
