Headlight issue

We were driving my wife's 914 not too long after having it trucked across the country. We turned on the headlights and they pop up fine and initially illuminated normally. After a brief period they turn off. If you turn off and retract the headlights and then turn them on again they will work properly for a brief period again and then turn off. Any ideas? An old relay? The under dash fuses look intact as far as I can tell.

They stay up but stop shining?

I would suspect the high/low relay that lives on top of the fuse panel. It's likely one of the square relays, not the round ones.

One of the fuses might also be partly or wholly to blame. Note that they can look OK from the outside, but actually be popped. I recommend pulling them, one at a time, to inspect. A popped one will have the metal fall apart when the clips no longer support it.

Spinning a fuse in place can also show a problem, and can scrape off some corrosion at the same time.

You can get weird stuff from relays not working right. Maybe clean the contacts for the fuses too.
