Dual Carb Hex Bar Length
 
I was helping a friend install a hex bar linkage on his 2.0 with 40mm Webers. What is the correct length of the cross bar? We first tried it with at 23" (too long) than he got a 19", but it seems that the 17 3/8" maybe right one.

Anyone know for sure. The kit came from CB Performance and there are about 5 or 6 lengths of bars avaible. You can't cut them because the ends have the centers countersunk for the springs.

Maybe you could carefully drill the hole deeper first, then trim the bar down? The aluminum should drill easily and the existing hole will help with centering. On my bar, the ball ends that fit into the holes in the bar fit just inside the outer edge. Just an idea to save you some time and shipping. I would measure my bar but my car isn't here at work. There may be various manifolds out there that will mean the crossbar length may vary between setups. Good luck!

I could drill the holes deeper and cut it, but didn't want to go to the trouble. Also this bar is steel, so not as easy to drill, but I could if I had to.

I just got the brand new hex bar linkage setup from CB. The hex bar is 20 1/8 inch long. This is the kit that they advertise is for the 914! I have not installed it yet, because I bought a Turbo setup instead. I hope it's the right one if I ever need it!

I have the CB hex bar linkage and yes, on some applications, you have to cut it to fit. Go figure ...

I measured it out and had my FLA machinist slice, dice, and drill the hex bar. Dropped right in afterwards.

It depends on the manifolds that you run. If you get the “Kit” with the manifold then the hex bars will be correct. Of course they sell short manifolds that if you look at how they match up with the carbs you’ll understand how wrong they are. On a 44 the butterfly will hit the sides of the manifold. So if you go to taller manifolds the distance between carbs increases, which mean you, need a longer bar. Most places have different lengths and you can exchange it for the correct length after you put everything together and measure.

It's not that hard to drill out the ends. Just be sure that you measure the original depth.

Hey guys,

We're trying to do a dual carb install on our 76 VW bus. No matter what we do, the linkage bar seems to be off center because of the cylinder arrangement. On my 912E, the carb kit is offset to account for this. But the CB performance kit for the bus is not. What gives?

I have been working on carbs all day, just went out and measured my bar 20 1/8". I'm not sure who makes the linkage as Jake installed it when he did my engine. My assembly looks to be aluminum.

Finally got my carbs running right, due to being stupid when installing the engine. :eek: :eek:

Mine is offset as are most if not all. The only one I have seen that is straight across was custom made. The upright cooling guys must have something that is straight across, but AFIK, CB doesn't make it nor Empi. I checked around alot and went with the CB style although it is pieced toghether from a couple of swap meet finds. It works fine. The linkage will vary in length with what ever manifolds you use.
