74 914 right headlight lid not opening

My right eyelid not opening early morning while dark, have to open it manually. What are the first things I need to check?

Hello - send Dave at Pelican Parts a PM, he is a 914 expert and will likely be able to assist.

Hello Dr.914, I did switch them and tried sanding, cleaning the relay connections with no luck on the right light coming up. Both relays work on both sides, switched them

Do you have to lower the headlight manually, or just raise it manually? If it will lower on its own when you turn the lights off, then I would suspect one of the microswitches in the headlight lifting assembly.

Check the wires that go to the headlight assembly as well. There should be a grey wire and a green/black (green with a black tracer stripe) wire. I believe the green/black one carries the "put the light down" signal, and it should be getting +12V when the key is on and the headlight switch is closed. (Double-check me with the side that actually works correctly.) The grey one should carry the "raise the headlights" signal, and get +12V when the key is on and the headlight switch is pulled out.

There should be a red wire going to the relay that is always hot, a green wire that actually sends power to the motor when appropriate, a black wire that connects to the microswitch/cam assembly in the headlight linkage, and a brown wire that is permanently grounded.

Check that the relay pins are getting the appropriate power and ground as well.

THANKS DAVE,.................where are the microswitches located at?

brcacti 10-11-2019 08:08 PM

Oh Dave by microswitches you mean relays? they are both good, the light assembly goes down automatically when the light switch is turned off but right side does not come up when lights turned on. So because it goes down I am assuming the motor is good?

The switches are inside the motor assembly.

The motor itself is good if the headlight goes down.

Check for the +12V on the grey wire when you turn the headlights on.
