Close Ratio Transmission
Talk about being lucky!!!??? We overhauled Julia's transmission last Sat and the one that came out of the car was pretty much good for parts only. So we used a spare I had and had never used.I finally got around to driving it today as she said it felt different and to my surprise it feels like the same close ratio gears as in my race car with 2nd,3rd and 4th very close!!! 5th still feels stock as there is a large RPM drop from 4th to 5th but getting on the freeway is a blast now! Thanks agian guys for the help!

John: Why not do a test and go to the same RPM and record constant speed for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. We _know_ 2nd hasn't changed. So we should be able to figure out your ratios pretty quick.
I'm not sure if 4th looked like it was touched. The 4th/5th slider was not new. And the synch bands and dog teeth also looked used. Maybe you do have another autocrosser tranny.... James

Thanks to James' excellent article on rebuilding trannys, I did a close ratio myself. The article was easier to read and understand than the Haynes, although it could use a little cleaning up. But it is still excellent. I have stock 1st and 2nd and then a "flipped' 5th, topped off with a T and Y 4th and 5th. I think this will be good for all around track use. Might be a little tight on top for crusing the freeway.
