Firewall Insulation Blanket Removal

Seeing Rob914's post about his battery shelf repair and loose firewall blanket made me wonder. If the blanket is removed, as many have done, is there a way to remove the old contact glue used to hold it down without removing the body paint? Is there a product that can loosen the old dried glue?

Thanks,
Mike

I agree w/ the glue and tar remover.

Are there any negative side effects to removing the firewall insulation? If so, what would they be besides being a little louder? Is there anyway to get new pads, since mine looks like death warmed over? Thanks

Nathan

the 3M adhesive remover was alot of work. gumout carb spray was incredible. spray on, let it work and the stuff came off easily. finish up with one of the orange plastic abrasive wheels in your cordless. with the 3M you have to rub and rub and rub. having my face in the fumes for 20 minutes was more than enough.

a brown coarse fibre pad. really retains the moisture and bat acid well. look at most 914's in wa biggie. the area around the bat box is usually shot or has been replaced. the area behind the pad can be a real eye opener. once the worm opens up the hole, in come the juices to ruin the pans, upper and lower fire walls, etc. if you look at a "rust free" up here take an icepick with you. the owner sees that and then remembers "oh there is a little rust". the pick goes through (the pad) to the handle and they just stammer.

A follow up to my earlier post, do most of you guys have the insulation mat removed? I agree it does look a hell of a lot better w/o it!

Ah... well. Took mine off, cleaned up the area, and put it back on. Doesn't seem to help too much with the six, noise wise.

...now, putting something on the other side of the firewall (under the backpad) might be an idea I go to next, since I agree that it looks better without it.

Up through 71 or 72 they didn't have any insulating pad on the engine side of the firewall anyway...

Yup. Mine had a lot of rust. The old pad looked OK on the outside but was dissolving from the inside. Seems it turns to a tan/brown sand like substance as it degrades. Stick your hand waaaay down there behind the heater fan and see what you find. I fixed the holes and painted the firewall, both sides, with POR-15. I might try Dynomat or something similar on the engine side.

if you remove the engine pad and the noise is too much, there is a foam pad for the interior side behind the interior back pad. i ditched them both. as for noise, if i wanted quiet i'd unload the 14 and buy a honda or something. scg, you went through the work to remove the pad and them glued one back on? wow, removing one is something i would only want to do once.

Noise? I kinda like the noise... I don't notice it at all with the top off. Soooo, next time I have the engine out (next winter?) out comes the back pad...again and for good. So far, I seem to have managed to keep the "things I wish I hadn't done when converting to a six" to this (putting the backpad back in) level.

POR-15 makes a nice silver... be a great color for the firewall so I can get more light in the engine area when I'm working...although olympic blue is pretty light too...

Scott, You've put the pad back in with a six?

I've converted to a six, but don't have the pad in.

It's very messy with the old glue so I was thinking of putting the pad back in but was worried about the reduced amount of air able to get to the fan.

Does yours run any hotter with the pad?

Andrew
