Carb cleaning question
Hey you guys out there with carbs. i just got of a pair of used Weber 40's with K&N filters on them. The filters are looking like they could use a bit of a cleaning, and I was wondering if I could get some suggestions on the best and/or cheapest way to bring them back to life. Also, i wouldn't mind hearing about a good way to clean up the carbs themselves. Any kind of input will be greatly appreciated.

K&N makes a cleaning and re-oil kit. Maybe $15. If you don't have the original instructions here are some general rules.
1. DO NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR. It will blow holes in the gauze the filter is made out of. 2. DO NOT USE HARSH CHEMICALS, again it hurts the filter material. If I remember right you can use mild soap and water, flush the filter with running water from the inside out. Although automatic tranny fluid looks the same as K&N oil, I;m told it is different. Use K&N oil. Best advise? Buy the kit. |

Yeah. Do not use carb cleaner, or gasoline. Just the soap and water, and a soft paint brush. Rinse it from the inside under the faucet, to push the dirt back out. The Dellorto tech book mentions filter oil first, but says that engine oil in a pan would work, rotating the filter exterior through the oil and then setting it to drain before installation. --john |
