clutch tube

I have the problem of my clutch guide tube weld broke about 5 inchs towards the front of the car from the shifter.
What is the easiest way of fixing this problem.I dont really want to cut a hole in my center tube. But i also want to fix it rite the first time.
The p.o. pushed it over towards the pass. side and drove a big nail through the top rite out the bottom to hold it out of the way from the shifter.(screw ball).
Hints and tips would be great!
thank you
Mike

Check out our thread on "2nd Gear Crunch". To do it right, you'd probably have to cut in through the floorpan. To jury rig it, you might be able to wire or clamp or cable tie it to the heater control tubes through one of the inspection plates in the top of the center tunnel.

I'm with Brian on doing the permanent fix. My other suggestions are just to get you from here to there till it can be done.

However, I disagree on welding. A good braze job will be just as strong. If you weld that thin tube, there is a very good chance you will have full penetration and leave a lump inside the tube. You clutch cable has a lot of tension on it and gets to saw back and forth over that spot and may eventually break.

I redid mine when I had the floor pan off. The best access is from the bottom, but it sounds like others have been able to get to it from the sides of the center tunnel. If you aren't handy with a welder, that would be the way to go, since you wouldn't need to weld the cuts back up from the top.
