No power to the fuel pump

Does anyone have any quick fixes, or obvious things that I should check out? '75 2.0 does not get any power to the fuel pump.

Also, does the computer control anything to do with the fuel pump, or could running a switched 12v connection be a quick temporary fix to my problem?

Thanks,
~Eric

Eric, Did you check the relay on the board in the engine bay? How about the fuse on the block? Are there any other symptoms such as othe relectrics dead? Is it a factory pump or carbs with a facet? Do you hear it cycle when you first turn the key without starting the car? If you think that the relay on the board in the engine compartment could be questionable, pull the round black cover off of it and press on the top of it with a screwdriver handle while trying to start the car. If all else fails, you might have one of those fuel pump demons that a few cars get that arevery hard to find. The only way to know for sure is to hook up +12V to the pump itself and see if it runs. If your pump runs, then you can start tracking the demon down..Remember, though it is tempting, it is not a good idea to run your car with the pump permenantly hotwired as you are asking for a fire or worse if an emergency occours...Just my HO...peter

Try checking out the temperature sensor #2 on the cylinder head. A bad one will disable the fuel pump.

There is a diagnostic flow chart for the fuel pump system at my web site.

Here's a few no cost simple items that should help: on the relay board, clean the fuse and its contacts. then clean the cylinder temp II contacts. While your there, it should be about 2500 ohms resistance to ground. when I bought my 1st 914, it had the relay board cover missing and no drip tray. all the fuses and contacts were green(corroded). damn picky german electrons don't like that green stuff

Thanks everyone for the help! Upon looking in the engine, I noticed that the #2 temp sensor was totally disconnected!!

I know that it was reconnected when the motor was put back into the car, so I am thinking that it got jostled loose when I was renewing the vacuum hoses.

That won't cause the pump not to run. It will cause a non-start, but the pump will still run...

Actually, there was a guy on the old Porschefans list whose D-jet car would only run when the fuel pump was not plugged in!!! Turns out that the head temp sensor was unplugged, and that was causing the injectors to open for long enough that "gravity-only" fuel pressure was enough to make the car run. Very, very poorly--but it ran!!

When testing the problem (before my post) we were able to make the car run with a battery charger supplying 12v to the pump, and run poorly with the pump completely disconnected. Thanks for shedding some light on the issue! I was thinking that the teener was possessed!!
