Angry A new electrical problem

I was driving the car to the store last night, for the first time everything seemed to be running right when the radio died, then the tach started acting strange (bouncing around) the volt gauge dropped to 0, and the alternator light came on. The car still ran and drove fine at this point.

When I got out of the car I noticed that my front and rear turn signal on the driver side were on (even with the keys out of the car) and the right side lights were not working at all.

Does anyone have any ideas where I should start?

~Eric

Check the fuses, the 4th or 5th one from the right and if it is blown/missing you will get some really strange electrical effects! Good luck.

Is battery OK?

I never cease to be amazed at the wierd behavior of a bad battery. The turn signal light should stay on (not flashing) if the lever is engaged. That is standard german parking light behavoir (you are supposed to leave it on if parked at curb under certain circumstances). Bad grounds also cause some goofy actions, but I would check with a battery known to be good. A bad batt may take a charge, may start the car, but will mess with your head, too.

The lights-on are almost certainly the "parking light" function. Check the turn signal lever.

The gauges and such are almost certainly due to a bad fuse. The fuses can be blown and still look OK until you take them out.

Definately sounds like the 4th from the right fuse. I've had this problem before. The tach acts ok until the brakes are applied, the alt light stays on & the blinkers act funny.

Even if the fuse is not blown - change it. I don't know why this happens but it happens to me every once in a while.

Thanks guys, it was a blown fuse, it also looked like the PO put the wrong fuses in the wrong places! Took it out for a test drive and blew the accelerator cable
