VDO clock repair

any suggestions on whether the clock is worth repairing? The PO had the hot lead pulled and taped. I like the VDO look. Anybody get theirs done and how much. Are there anolog clocks which will fit the factory hole?

I contacted North Hollywood Speedometer last month, to see what it would take to get my original VDO clock repaired and they quoted me $180 to fix it. They are very good, but you can buy a new clock for a lot less, unless you are a purist. As Mark suggested, check out the PP Tech Article; that's what I'm going to do, and see if I can fix it myself. I don't really like the replacement VDO clock as it is smaller and requires an adapter to mount on the console.

I like the idea of the clock not working, when you take the car for a short spin and you are gone for three hours you can tell the wife you had no idea you were gone so long.

Greg, you may find that you can add a works from a craft/hobby store to your clock face to keep the look and have functionallity. That's what I'm considering doing. I've got a dead one, too.

The aggravating thing with mine, though, is that I have a good idea which part is bad. I just can't get a new one.

I'm pretty sure that's what the problem is because there is a puff mark on the board coming from underneath the "little metal can" component. I don't know what it is by function since it has five or six leads in an array on it. It's marked SSS which was Solid State Scientific. They were sold to Sprague, then on to another company, then on to at least two more from info I've found on the web. Trail goes cold from there. Problem is that since I don't know what kind of part it is, I can't drop in a replacement from Digi-key.

If anyone knows of a boneyard for these that I could get that one part from, please let me know. I'd really appreciate it.

Good luck, Greg.

--Case...
