Angry Ball Joints suck!

What an ugly job. The ball joint tool needs to be renamed the "Ball Joint INSTALLATION Tool." It is worthless for removing a ball joint.

Used my chinese dremel and a whole bunch of discs and a chisel to break the "NUT". 2 hours later the nut is off. Another 15 minutes and the ball joint is off.

Install time, including cleaning the rusty retention screw, putting a heavy coating of antisieze on everything , and install it and putting the wheel back on - maybe 15 minutes.

What a PIA! Anyway it's done and the car runs great.

A "quick" oil change and I was off. (Quick included 1 hour finding place to take the used oil that was filling my 2 drain pans...)

Next week: The dual exhaust goes back on the car, the front valance goes back on the car, the passenger seat back gets installed, wash, polish and wax.

Just trying to get ready for the run. That ball joint was going to be a show stopper. As a minimum, it will get washed

See ya next Sunday.

I agree with the tool discription.

To get mine off I used a BF pipe wrench and a 3 foot cheater. Give me a big enuff lever & I'll move the world.

at least it's not a chebbie... on my old truck the ball joint decided to fail all at once... at 60! the wheel was only held on by the tie rod! I thought it was the worse flat I'd ever felt until I got out of the car and realised we could have died! SCARY!!!

Well, at least you didn't have any trouble getting the ball joint off....

James

Glad you're alive to tell the tale!

YES! I used a huge pipe wrench, and a pickle fork, with the handle of my floor jack stuck on it. Took three days of PB Blaster, and prying before they even budged. Oh, yea pounded the **** outta them too.

I had the sme thing happen on an '81 Chevy Dually. Man that hting hit the ground hard! Being a big ol' freight train of a truck, it didn't spin around. Still,it was sacary like you say and same thing, little damage. I sold the truck right away.

The tool only works twice... then you have to buy another. I hate tie rod ends, too.

On the early ball joints, you need the bolt
pinches the strut. I just replaced mine,
using grade 8.8. I can't find 10.9 anywhere
local. What is the grade supposed to be?
Is 8.8 going to cut it?
Thanks,
Mark S.

Tie rod ends! Several years ago I did a complete front end rebuild and decided to buy a tie rod end puller from Automotion, "The Tool for the Job". The left tie rod came of with the first application, piece of cake. But the right rod end kept slipping through the jaws of the tool. I went and bought a pickle fork from the local parts place and proceeded to try every combination I could think of using BFH force, heat from a torch, penetrating oil, etc. I don't even remember how I got that SOB loose. I still have the tool. Hope I don't need to use it again!

Think "Great Big Huge Adjustable Wrench", and you're pretty close. But it's the outer part of the jaw that moves, instead of the inner one. And it wobbles--intentionally. Due to where the adjustable jaw is located, when you put the wrench onto a pipe (or other Thing That Must Move Now) and heave on it, the jaws actually grip tighter.

They'll have a bunch of 'em at your local Home Debit.

Common name is a "Monkey Wrench". It's the thing you see the three stooges hitting each other over the head with. Or they would grip one of the guys by the nose.

And that monkey's got nice sharp teeth that leave their marks unless you pad the jaws. That's what what leaves those scrapes you see on threaded steel pipe joints. Be carefull when you use one on your concours 914! LOL! Not that I've ever used one, even if I do have two! Okay, maybe for the ball joints.
