....from the local guy I bought my suspension stuff from. Here's the scoop - He said it lost compression in one of the cylinders, but still ran, although poorly. He guickly pulled it and put in another one, and shelved it for like 10 years. Not sure of why, maybe valve oriented, he never checked
, he didn't bother 'cause he had another one laying around (a 2.0 that had some head work and a cam, but stock P/Cs, and that really flies, I've driven the car). He's looking to get $450 for it (he's firm on the price), but it doesn't include any exhaust, carbs, intakes or FI (it was an FI motor originally, but those parts are long gone.) I can sell mine to a VW guy locally for $400, but then I'd have to cough up some coin for the missing pieces, and then any rebuild cost, not to mention to fix the "mystery" problem. Is this a decent deal, or should I wait for a complete motor/intake/exhaust to stroll by? I'd think it would be cost effective to utilize a complete, matched, existing setup than to piece something together? .......what to do what to do what to do what to do I think for now I'll get some coffee and see what y'all think Jeff |

Well, if you plan to go FI on it then I think you should pass.
You may spend over $500 for all the missing pieces, and you can get the whole package (running well) for $1000. |

Hey James, what's shakin?
I plan on using carbs, but he won't part with the set he has, so I'd have to find a set w/ intakes too - 500 bucks?

It is a core motor...known problems, incomplete...200 max.. IMHO.

I was thinking getting all the 2.0 FI parts (working) and the exhaust would put you into the $500+ range.
Carbs should be $300ish. But you may have a $$$ head problem with that engine - doesn't sound like it's worth $450 unless you can verify the problem first. |

Get him to pull the heads so you can inspect the heads/valves/pistons. That will determine the value of this engine. he may have had a bad spark plug wire or something. In that case $400 would be a decent deal.
If it has a dropped valve, cracked head, or burned up piston then it is worth closer to $200 max. Heads can be expensive, pistons/cylinders can be extremely expensive. find out what it needs, then you will know what it will cost to get running. |

I can do anything cheep, as long as my labor is free. I figure i made at least 3 cents an hour on my last couple of Porsches I fixed up
Plus I like to scrounge around and find perfectly good pieces in junk yards, one man's trash...... you know the rest. |

Watch what you say Sammy - M. is litigation happy - I think he may be an AA spy or possibly the Doctor's clone. Ya know how things stick together in Georgia.

Yeah, you're right (why didn't I think of that?), I'll try to get him to pull the heads to make sure. I'm looking for a winter project, so it's good to start looking now to get ideas. I was thinking earlier of some type of GM conversion, but I've more or less settled on the 2.0 after driving a wicked fast one. BUT HEY what do you think of that 911T motor for $1500 on the 911 classifieds? It's supposed to be complete, maybe I should start saving for a flat six and either go big or go home

Ok Ron, that does it, consider your stuff mine!
Scooter, I have seen many happy faces in a 2.2 or 2.4/6, it's a very nice setup for streeting, the big money spent on a 3.0+ seems to be good though, they last forever, or at least til they break.. ![]() I am considering legal action against you too, watch your step. M

You will end up rebuilding the whole motor. Should you pay $450 for a core? That's up to you. I bought a 1.8 for $50 just to get the special case bolt washers and a few other bolts and brackets. They all want big bucks until the man with the money ready comes along. Then it's show time.

Ron slowly turns around ~ faces East ~ drops to his knees ~ fold his hands and offers tithing to the Praline God. ~ exit stage left - fade to black.
