New Member with questions

Hello,

I'm a new 914 owner from the San Francisco bay area. I was wondering if there was a good source for used bumpers for a 73-74 914? From what I've seen, front bumpers in good shape are rather hard to find. Used rear bumpers in good shape are easier to come by. I need both as I plan to backdate the bumpers on a 75.

I have seen the stainless steel ones from Auto Atlanta, how does the stainless look in person? From the videos I've seen, the stainless don't have that same pop as chrome.

Looking forward to turning wrenches on an air-cooled car again. :D

Thanks
Ted

I don't know if Partsheaven over in the East Bay still has 914 parts.

High Performance House in Redwood City definitely does. Rich is very proud of his parts, though, so don't expect them to be cheap!

Hey Dave!

It looks like Partsheaven is closed permanently. I called Rich and he said all the front bumpers he had left were rough. Rears seem to be plentiful.

I guess I'll just keep looking. :/

Auto atlanta sells reproduction front bumpers if I remember. I think once a year they do a sale. I found mine on FB marketplace and had it shipped. I found a back bumper locally at a small mom and pops porsche repair shop.

Bruce Stone down in Riverside may have some. Ditto Garold Shaffer out in IN. Not cheap to ship, though.

Thank you both for the information. Ironically, I was just left Riverside after a two day Orientation with my son. Im headed back down there in 5 weeks to drop him off at school, maybe I can drive home with a new pair of bumpers!

What's the general consensus on the stainless bumpers?

Thanks again,
Ted

I have seen a few pairs of the SS bumpers in person and they looked nice. I have never owned one so I do not know how they look over time. But I think, cost wise, it may be a toss-up between finding a used set and having therm chromed or just buying new SS. Are you a 914World member? If so, place a WTB in the classifieds and keep and eye on it. It may take a bit, but bumpers regularly become available.

I am going to have my front bumper re-chromed once I find a good shop. I had it done a year ago and it just does not look correct; kind of a blue tinge to it. Just need to find a good chrome shop that does not want your first born for the work.

Hello Dave!

I went to see Rich on Saturday, man... you weren't kidding about being proud of his parts! In a few cases his prices for used parts were as high as new parts. Kind of bummer because he has a TON of used parts and it's close to home. It would be nice to support a local shop, however in light of his prices, I went ahead and ordered some stainless bumpers and all the associated parts online. Now I just wait for everything to show up. :D

Take care,
Ted
