Buying a sideshift finally

Well, I still can't seem to get my tailshifter to work, it seems to still be stuck in the gate between 2nd and 3rd. I have an opportunity to buy a sideshift and all of the stuff to convert it. I have a choice of 8 trannys, all of them out of the car. Besides checking the oil and truning the input shaft, what are some good ways to tell if a tranny is any good? How can I check the shift engagement with the tranny out? Any help would be grateful. I need to get the car on the road soon!!!
Thanks
Mark

Thanks for the Praise! I appreciate it.

There is not much you can do short of opening up the tranny and looking at the condition if it is out of the car.

Fortunately, pulling the gear stack out is actually pretty easy.

Is there anything you can do with the trani out to "freshen it up"? I have my sideshift out and am going to buy the main seal and the other seal that goes there (forgot the name). My dad doesnt want me to split it open because he thinks that it'll cost alot of money if I find something wrong, and my budget will not be able to handle that.. Any suggestions Trani Guru?

Ps, I also have a spare trani that is in unknown condition, from the looks, poor, but thats just because its really dirty.

Spend the $ and get the complete gasket kit. If you have a spare tranny, you have the parts to fix the tranny. A tranny being dirty on the outside usually says more about the engine it was attached to than the condition of the tranny.

For me? I'd open it up and get a good look inside. Better to do a little tranny work now with it out, than later.

Alright, theres another 2 weeks of a non running car . Ok, I'll break open the trani.. Just dont know if I have the know how to fix anything. My guess is that with all the griding my dad did driving it home with no clutch I have 1'st gear gone, and my spare probably isnt any better. Oh well. Red beard, how long would it take to change all the seals and change oil exc. for a sideshift? Thanks..

A Couple of hours if all you are doing is opening the case, pulling off the side cover, pulling off the Axel stubs, cleaning off gasket material, cleaning the tranny case. (Now would be a good time to take the tranny case and end cover to a machine shop).
