I recently purchased a 1973 914 1.7 that believe it or not has semi cold A/C ( not my imagination I swear). The problem is at stops or very low RPM driving the compressor squeals because of belt slip on the pulley. The belt is very loose. I can feel a small idler pulley and tensioner bracket under the main compressor pulley but access is so tight I can't see it. Just by feel I can't figure out how to adjust the belt tensioner. Does anyone have any recent experience or remember from back in the day how to adjust A/C belt tension with the engine in the car. It is the VPC brand system with a large York compressor and the black metal box condensor in the front trunk. ANy help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks.............Eric |

Yep, you're suppose to shim the compressor's mounting bracket. The idler pulley provides no adjustment capability whatsoever.
Download this VPC AC manual (it's hefty; 'bout 32 megs) and it should provide the procedure. Be sure to start with a new belt if you're going to all that trouble.

Sorry, Adam. When it's 100 degrees out there, even taking the top off doesn't help.
Leave the a/c where it is. Especially one that's working.

Just changing the belt on these is a chore in itself. You almost have to drop the engine. I wonder how they did it at the dealer. I t looks like they took off the engine fan and shroud to get it in there.

It's all good Rich, I'm just not much of an A/C guy. Maybe it's because my current car gets 11mpg with out the A/C on and 8-9 with it.
