dumb ??? but nice underside pics...
ok... i put the 914 on jackstands the other day and finally had time to crawl underneath to take a look. I noticed a couple of wires that were loose and decided to go on a picture-taking rampage.
Can you tell me what this plate is used for on the bottom of the engine? The wire coming out of it leads nowhere... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/oilplate1.jpg Also, what is this box that a fuel line feeds through to my engine compartment? I believe the wire to this one is not hooked up either... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/fuelbox2.jpg Thanks. rob. |
The top pic is the oil sump with what appears to be a temp sensor. You will probably find a temp guage in the car.
The second pic is a Facet fuel pump. I'll assume that you have carbs on the engine, since the Facet unit is a low pressure pump, whereas the original FI used a high pressure pump. Hope this helps. Eric |
ditch those clamps, they cut into the fuel lines! get the fi style. if you don't have one you need a fuel pressure regulator.

I thought that might be the temp sensor, especially since I don't get a reading on my gauge for it. Does it run straight to the gauge? What route should it take?
what do the FI clamps look like? I do have carbs and the ressure regulator is there, located in the bottom of engine compartment coming up through on the passenger's side. |
these. note they lack the groves that the screw drives and the edge is shouldered. look at the bulge at the incoming line to your fuel pump. that would cause me some concern. have you ever replaced the plastic lines in the tunnel? if you add an isolator inbetween the pump and the car it will be much quieter.

also. is the fuel filter upstream of the pump, or up in the engine compartment? the fuel should be filtered before it reachs the pump. when i redid mine i used a real 914 filter ( get them here). forget those crappy little cone shaped vw ones.

fuel filter is the typical VW one in the engine compartment. I replaced the rubber hose in the engine compartment but haven't yet replaced any prior to the pressure regulator. I'll look into the new filter and new plastic hoses here.
what is the cylindrical object that the fuel line is feeding into (?) to the right of the pump? could that be another filter? and what do you mean about an isolator between the pump and the car? Thanks! |
The part of the pump on the right is just part of the unit itself, not a filter. That pump tends to be a bit noisy, and if directly bolted to the car's metal, can make the noise more noticable. And isolator is usually has subber between the pump mount and the attachment to the car.

Does anyone know where I would get a plate like the one in the top photo (the one with the temp sensor). i need to hook up a temp sensor on my car & the plat in this photo has a buldge in it - my is just flat.

You can make your own if you are using a VDO gauge.
You just need the VDO sender and a 1/4 - 1/8" pipe bushing reducer and a welder (JB Weld might work here too). http://www.qtm.net/~persot/sump_plate_1.jpg http://www.qtm.net/~persot/sump_plate_2.jpg http://www.qtm.net/~persot/sump_plate_3.jpg http://www.qtm.net/~persot/sump_plate_4.jpg Later, Tom |
That sender looks like it's drilled into the wrong spot. It's supposed to go in at an angle in that little indentation on the plate. You may have clearance problems with the oil strainer.
|
I believe that Tom is running full flow to an external cooler
Carlos |
It fits just fine. Full flow or not, it will clear the boss that the plate mounts to.
I already checked... ;) BTW, there is no strainer here. You are talking about the *middle* sump plate which is different than the front inspection plate. This plate runs underneath the oil pickup tube galley and the dipstick location. Tom |
Oh yeah, DUH!, lol
|
The oil temp gauge three leads on the rear....a ground wire, a 12v power supply and the lead from the sender. Then there are the lights for night operation....:p
