brake warning light
I have filled and bleed my brake system after the restoration. the master cylinder sat with plugs in all the ports for probably 2 years with no fluid. Now the brake warning lite is on. All the air seems to be out of the system and I can't get a very firm pedal and it has a lot of travel, also the brake warning lite will not go out. Could this be a sign that the master cylionder is bad?

the seals probably dried out
I'm no expert, but maybe they'll expand(?) or you'll end up rebuilding it.To see if your warning light goes out, there is a rubber "dome" on the left(?) side iof the master cylinder that covers a button. Press the dome (you should hear/feel something click). check to see if the light went out. If it did, press the brake pedal and see if the light stays off. As John say below, new would be best (*safest*) just my .02 euros worth (no more pfennigs )

I agree with the dried seals and if you want to drive the car I'd recommend getting a new m/c. It is definately the safest thing to do. Good luck

Jeff,
I believe Scott & John are correct but, just to be thorough, I would verify that your emergency (hand) brake michroswitch is not giving you the warning light rather than your master cylinder. Also, if you have rebuilt the front calipers, be sure that the bleed valves are on the upper end of the calipers. If the bleed valves are on the bottom ends of the calipers, you have the driver side caliper interchanged with the passenger side and you will not be able to bleed air out of the system. (Yes, I've done this before.) philinjax |

Oops, Yes, I've interchanged left with right front brake calipers before but, they were 911 M calipers which had only one bleeder valve per caliper. I think all 914 front calipers have two bleeders per caliper. My screw up.

I checked the e-brake switch late last night after searching the archives. Not the cause so then I pulled the boot to check for reset button no button so pulled the wire and it went out.

IIRC the reset button is on the MC. Access is made from below the car.
Cheers Kerry
