New fuel pump not pumping

I have a 72 914 and this past weekend installed a new (rebuilt) fuel pump. I'm frustrated. The pump runs but its not pumping. I would like someone to confirm that I have hooked it up properly. There are 3 ports on the pump and labeled with letters.

S port connected to large fuel line from gas tank & fuel filter
D port connected to line going to engine
R port connected to a Y connector going to fuel pressure regulator & small fuel line to gas tank.

Gas gushes out of the fuel filter so I know its getting plent of fuel. I tested the pump with the S port connected to the gas tank and the D port with a long hose to a pail. Ran the pump and nothing comes out of the D port. I do get significant gas out of the R port. Do I have the D and R ports mixed up?

When testing, what was your pump R port connected to? Also, are you sure the lines at the regulator are correctly connected?

When I originally tested the pump, I had my ports connected as I listed. When the car wouldn't start, I began troubleshooting and determined that I didn't have any gas at the injectors. I then started suspecting the pump where I tried running the pump without any back pressure to see. To my surprise, it wasn't pumping anything to the injectors.

As for my lines to the fuel pressure regulator, I haven't changed them and the car was running ok before. I can double check it tonite.

But no matter, should I be able to pump gas into a pail? I still suspect I have a defective rebuilt pump.

i'd say if you can pump into a pail, you have the lines misconnected, that is, the return line in the engine compartment is connected to pressure and the line that should be from the pressure outlet of the pump is connected to the line that is supposed to be the return line. that's my guess.

S= suction, from the tank

D= druck - pressure to the injector loop

R- return - line from the pressure regulator & this port teed together (excess from pump) back to tank.

If you did not have a plug in the wiring harness for the pump and wired it like the Haynes Manual - it is running backwards - unless I'm dyslexic when I hooked mine up.

My $0.05 worth

Everyone,

Thank you for your advice. I will double check the polarity of my electrical connections. I confirmed last night that I had the hoses correctly routed. I either messed up the electrics or the pump is a dud.

I double checked the electric connections. They were correct. The pump is defective.

It is also possible that the Aux. Air valve may be faulty. On my old car, i had this same problem, The AAR uses the same circuit as the fuel pump so it may be possible to see if unplugging the AAR helps at all.
