CV joint spacers

Putting the drive shafts back onto the transmission and I noticed I only have one spacer per side for the CV joint. When I see the CV joint kits they come with three, Do I really need the other two, if so were can I just buy them?

These are the spacers or washers I was talking about.

Those are more "lock plates" than spacers. I think they are available separately, but it may take a bit of digging to get the part number for the individual parts. Try 888-280-7799; Jason and John are both 914 guys.

If they are just lock plates and I have one on each side do I really need the other two?

You should use three of the plates on the outside of each CV joint. One plate goes under the heads of each pair of bolts. You'll notice that the bolt holes in the plates line up with the bolt holes in the CV joints. You only need one on each side if you only want two bolts to keep from backing out of each CV joint. If you want all six bolts to stay in the CV joint, probably a good idea given the application, install all three on each side.

Note that the stock 914 CV joint only has four bolts, and two roll pins. Only two lock plates are needed per joint.

The CV joint kit in the picture is for a VW. The boot has 6 holes and six bolts. The cv joint will work, but as stated there are only 4 bolts, 2 roll pins and 2 lock plates on a 914. I believe you have to drill out the holes a little larger for the roll pins.
