Remote starter
Hi Guys:
I bought a remote starter today and the instructions are confusing (to me) as to exactly how to connect this thing correctly/safely (on a 914, anyway). I think it should connect from the starter solenoid to ground and the ignition switch should be on. Am I correct? Where exactly on the solenoid (starter) should it connect? Is there a terminal or something? I didn't get a chance to work on the 914 tonight, but will try tomorrow after work. Hopefully, you guys can get me in the right direction. Thanks in advance! Andy...

If it's just a starter button, you connect it to the post on the starter that gets the THICK cable from the battery, and to the male spade terminals on the solenoid. You need to turn the key to "on" if you want the car to run when cranking the starter. Make certain that the car is out of gear or you'll get to redecorate your garage the hard way...

You can add a remote starter button for use under the hood which is very handy if you are an auto-x'er or racer. The button allows starting from outside the car so you can check the engine before having to climb over the roll cage tubes. It would have a second wire connected to the normal connection to the starter and feed from switched 12v.

I know a 914 owner that had a typical hot start problem due to a faulty ignition switch. He hard wired a push type start button in the engine compartment. One wire to the positive side of the starter and the other to the spade on the solenoid. It worked great but it was a band aid i.e. it treated the symptom and not the disease.

i have a remote starter on my car it was easy to install
the start relay ( remote ) supplies power to the fat yellow wire from the ignition switch the on relay supplies power to the on wire from the ignition switch and a brake light feed to act as a kill switch scott ps it is a great way to trouble shoot an engine that wont start you can sit in the engine bay ( you know what i mean ) and hit the button then check out each componet
