it all started with Easyoff oven cleaner

Last satuday evening went something like this. I'm bored. I have five extra fuchs in the shed... they look horrid. honey do we have any easyoff?.........so I put the Easyoff thing to the test. It stripped the anodized coating like butter... very cool! now what? cleaned, wet sanded and polished two steps. medium and fine. all told about an hour and a half per wheel. Now, they ain't perfect ... but pimp daddy for autoX wheels...Next stop tire rack.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1063334642.jpg

nothing fancy here.

I wish I had taken a before shot!

Like I said not perfect. This is the stock finish under the anodized finish. Rough and with tooling , marks...some worse than others
I suppose this is where the real time is spent. A mega size wheel and motor would help..

If you have a set of crappy wheels, this is a quick fix....cheers scott

Have you thought about getting them clear anodized now?

norustscott 09-11-2003 08:14 PM

some kind of clear coat is going to be required...this was kind of a no cash outlay thing...Clear powder coat would work too.

Whoops, hit enter too fast. You gonna have them on the car this weekend? Just don't laugh too hard at the getto job I did on my wheels.

Are Fuchs factory clear coated? Or anodized or sumptin'? Those look great and I've thought about doing a similar process, but I've noticed a spot one one where there is a much shinier portion on one "spoke" that discolors the polishing cloth when the Wenol polish hits it. I've been guessin' it was where the finish had been buffed away so the raw aluminum is exposed. I see others recommend a clear coat of some kind too. Will they oxidize otherwise?

I believe the whole wheel is anodized, two different coatings. The wheel starts with a low gloss satin appearance and then the lower "spokes" have a Matte slightly gold tone finish.

Hi Scott,

Did you have to scrub the easyoff or did it just rinse off? Just this week I started to think about doing this to my fuchs. Good timing!!SmileWavy

The oven cleaner bubbles up (in the sun) and you rinse it off, and repeat as needed..

Usually 2 apps, and no coating, 3 tops. Any more than that, and you aren't leaving it on long enough.
