Is this a 1.8L motor?

I am considering buying this motor but the seller can't find the engine i.d. number.

Look on the top of the motor back by where the transmission bolts go through it should be on the top of the block off to the right side. If it is a 1.8 it will be there. If it is not there, look between the oil filler and the fan shroud. Some of the 1.7 liter models had it there. Good luck.

looks like a djet 1.7 to me.

chrisreale 09-18-2003 05:54 PM

1.7 is what I think

Will98D 09-18-2003 07:19 PM

It's got the 1.7 Aux Air valve and the bracket to hold the air cleaner. The tin is 1.7 or 1.8, so that rules out a 2.0 D-jet. You could also take a quick look at the distributor to see if it has a set of trigger points, which would be on a 1.7 but not a 1.8

Is this the throttle valve housing (circled in red)? If it is, then this should be a 1.8, no? The b/w pictures below are from the factory EFI manual and they illustrate the 1.8 AFC motor.

No, it's a 1.7 indeed. A 70-72 1.7, from the heater blower mounting. Also from the end of the motor mount bar that you can see. That's a tail-shift mount.

The 1.7 TB looks exactly like that; the 1.7 and 1.8 have the manifold and throttle body in the same location, pretty much.

Ok, thanks all. I'm going to contact the seller and ask him to email me pics of his other (hopefully 1.8) motor.

Why? The 1.7 had more power than the 1.8. I would rather have the 1.7. Just my opinion. It you cant go 2.0 then the 1.7 is the way to go.

Biggy72 09-18-2003 11:51 PM

my 1.7 sure is strong. I don't know what a 2.0 would feel like but after tuning up mine tonight I'm pretty impressed..... maybe I'm just too used to a good ole 1600 dp...

If you're going to do anything with it in the future the 1.8 has much better heads. As far as the stock hp, 80 (early 1.7) vs 73 (1973 Calif 1.7) vs 76 (1.8)... who cares? And, if you already have a 1.8 set up with L-Jet that you're replacing then it's likely better to match, and you'd get the right distributor, air valve, intake, etc., as spares.

Alfred1 09-19-2003 12:39 PM

Will98D is exactly right. I want to use a 1.8L motor as a base for building a 2258cc high-performance motor and since Jake Raby uses 1.8 or 2.0 heads in his 2270cc motors, I figured I'd do the same. I'll use the 1.8 heads as cores when I buy big-valve Type IV heads and I'll use the case for the rest of the big-four build up.

You guys were right. The engine number is W 0062841 which, I think, makes it a 1.7L from a 1970.

Dave at Pelican Parts 09-20-2003 04:49 PM

Or 71, or possibly early 72.
