Lots of smoke

I was driving when a very disturbing exaust smell filled the cabin of my car. when I reached a stop sign the cabin then fill with white smoke as well did the out side of the car. The smoke was so bad then when I started to drive I looked out the rear window I couldn't see anything through the smoke.

When I got home I put my car on jack stands to see that I had no hose from the heater box to the cabin. on the drivers side.

I started my car and noticed that all of the smoke was coming from a plate that was that I will post a picture of, but intill then, the plate is right next to the the drivers side of the oil pan. All I can think of is an oil pan gasket leak.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Adam

oil dripped onto the heat exchangers and blew it into the cabin. any holes in your HE's? i think you're referring to the "taco plate". check oil level, torque down taco plate. keep an eye on it.

Is the metal plate the one that bolts onto the bottom of the heat exchangers and the side of the crankcase? If so, there's a decent chance that your thermostat cable pulley has fallen off. The hole that the pulley bolt goes into actually goes all the way through into the sump, and when you go around right turns it will leak oil out.

I did notice a cable that was attached to a pulley at one end and nothing on the other end, and thought that didn't look kosher. My car is going to the shop tomorrow and the mechanic is gonna let me use his lift to fix my car.

How do I reattach the cable?

That doesn't answer your question, I know. But this will help you understand the bellows and what it does should you go fooling with it.

Deffinatly sounds like an oil leak on the HE's. I drove a 74 1.8 that had a pushrod tube leak on the HE's. It smoked into the cabin, and when you shut it off, it smoked out of the engine compartment.

You mean you need the thermostat? The accordion-bellows kinda thing, with a bracket on it, that bolts to the side of the sump?

The cable runs from the flap down thru a Grommet in the sheet metal to a round wheel then turns and runs over to the thermostat a bellows like object that is held in place by a square braket. The cable attaches to the thermostat with a nut about 1.5 inches long. I checked last week all of these parts are avaiable Except the Bracket. Otto or Conemac Should have those.Steve
