Help--cyl. 3 & 4 not firing

I have a stock '74 914 2.0L.

Recently I had the heads rebuilt. Afterwards, the car ran very well. Learning as I go, I learned that I needed to set the end play. So I removed the transmission, flywheel, etc. and set the end play. Reversed the steps and started up the engine. To my shock and horror, cyls. #3 & #4 were not firing. I checked for compression, good. I checked for spark, good. It was getting late so I haven't checked for fuel through the injectors yet or signals to the injectors. That's for this PM. I haven't disturbed the timing that I know of. It is still close enough for the other two to fire.

If you have any thoughts on what may be happenning, let me know.

Thanks

Pritchard

Triger points in the bottom of your dizzy...if you are running FI...

I thought about that. But, correct me if I'm wrong, they fire in pairs (1&4, 2&3). So if I'm having problems with cyls. 3 & 4, I'm thinking that it wouldn't be the trigger points.

During lunch today I remembered that I banged the grounding connections near the air distributor several times while removing the nut on the starter/bell housing bolt. If I knocked on of the connectors loose, could this be the problem?

Keep your ideas coming please!

Hey Pritchard it sounds like you are tracking by checking those grounds. The F.I. system won't function properly unless those grounds are intact. Keep us informed. Thanks, Ian

Yup! On my D-jet wiring harness (74 2.0), there are three ground plugs. Each has two wires going to it. The wires are:

Ground for the ECU
Ground for the throttle switch
4 * ground for the injector

In other words, it is likely that one of the plugs has come off.

Bingo!!

It was the grounding plugs at the air distributor. Whew! Finally something easy to fix! Ha! Ha!

Thanks guys!
