Starting 914 after extended down period
I have a 76 2.0 which hasn't been started for several years. It doesn't appear to be getting fuel enough to start when it's cold. The engine will fire if it is primed with raw fuel through the air intake. Any ideas which sensors or systems to check?

If it is the fuel system at fault, check the cold start vavle (it is actually a 5th injector). Follow the fuel lines from one side of the engine to the other. Some place on the intake box is the injector, it will have both a fuel line and a two prong electrical connector. Unless you live up noth where the weather still goes below 50 then this probably not the problem. Either a bad injector or a bad thermo switch that activates it. The 50 degrees is just a guess but I think that is the cut off temp.
I would check the spark from the coil is it big and fat or small and skinny. Also change the fuel filter and check that the aux air bypass is working. It is a round thingy that has a 13mm vac hose from the air box before the thottle body, a red wire, and another 13mm vac line going to the intake after the thottle body. Does the car start back up if it is already warmed up? Also do a tune up \, new plugs, points, fuel and air filter, oil change, and check the dwell and timing. These parts are cheap, and if you have to pay a mechanic it should not take more than 1-2 hours at most. |
