The Lord Be With Me
The 914 Chevy V-6 conversion has been a long, fun, yet tedious journey. It almost came to an end today. I had the car out in the sun, drove it 15 feet in reverse to get it there. That is as far as I have driven it to this point . I proceeded to do some painting in the interior and then test drove an old GTI that just received a new shifter. Well, the GTI shifted better, however, the 914 had smoke pouring out of the interior when I returned. In a panic, I through open the trunk and hit the battery disconnect. I had set the part of the center console on the floor that holds the gauges, and something was shorting out heavily. All of the wires that run off of the gauges to the connectors near the shifter, were melted together. In addition, some mystery wires also suffered a melt down. They actually burned through the mechanical oil pressure gauge tube. And also through a new wire loom. I was pissed, but then I was happy that I didn't take a longer drive in the GTI.
If anyone has and would like to sell the short section of harness that attaches to the center console, please let me know. Otherwise, I will just make one up ,if I don't burn "it" up first. Pete |

Pete,
Sorry to hear about the mishap and sure glad you got it under control before things got any worse. Electrical fire is one of the things that still scares me about these cars. I'm tempted more and more to add fusible links on the red wires at the battery in order to provide some fault protection. I have parts of an old harness. I'll take a look to see if it has the section you're looking for, and if I have it I will PM you. |
