Help - Pulling Tail Shifter Shift Rod

Guys:

It is finally cool enough to take care of the shift bushing job on my six.

Need to separate the shift rod, from the fork that hook to the rear of the tranny. Looks like there is either a set screw or something that is pushed in that holds it together.

Before I get out the big hammer and beat the crap out of it, is this some funky metric set screw, or just something i need to push out with a hammer and a pin????

It is a roll pin. Carefully drive it out with a drift punch. I'm told it is NLA so save it to reuse. I had the pleaure of removing mine twice because I didn't pay attention to the orientation of the fork to the bend in the rod. It only works one way.

Thanks so much Jim

It looked like a roll pin, but before I cursed at it a lot, I wanted to make sure it wasn't one of those wierd metric set screws.

Everything else is out and all of the bushings were totally gone - disintegrated.

So I am hoping the shifting will be better than it was.

Mine were disintegrated too. It will make a big difference. If you need advice on adjusting after you get it together, let me know. James Tomlinson (red beard) has a great method.

I've read red-beard's adjustment method and it sounds like it makes sense.

I couldn't believe how bad the three bushings were. I doubt they had ever been changed. The only one that was still working was the front one near the shifter.

From what I can tell so far, most of the play is gone.

The adjustment will have to wait for next weekend. The old body can stand only so much pain.

By the way, the pin came out nicely. I disconnected the rear mount from the transmission so I could get a clean hammer shot on it and it came out undamaged.

We've got a 40th Anniversary Party for the Gold Coast Region next month and the six is going to be in the concours.

Thanks again for your help. It was the missing link in the whole project.
