1.7 or 2.0?
I just picked up a 914 that I wll be using for parts. The prior owner claims that the engine is a rebuilt 2.0 with 5,000 miles on it.
The EA case is definately a 1.7 case. The 4-bolt heads have 2.0 heat exchangers & a 2.0 bursche muffler. My question: Assuming that the heads are 2.0 VW Bus heads, does that mean there will be 2.0 pistons or can you put 2.0 heads on other size pistons. Also, can these heads be used on a stock 1.8? My other 914 is a 1.8 & needs new heads. I was thinking of using these heads for the time being, until I can build a "real" 2.0 engine. Any advice would be great......................Vern |
1.8 cylinders fit onto 2.0 heads with no modifications required. The 1.7 cylinders do not--you would have to use some kind of spacer ring to get them to fit correctly.
2.0 Bus heads have little tiny valves (smaller than the 1.7 ones, even!) and a poor combustion chamber design. The 1.8 ones are better in just about every way... --DD |
