Smokin' 2.0

Hey mah peeps, happy Monday
My friend is still tinkering with his 74, with a 2.0 - he just picked it up from the shop where he had the old paint and some scratches touched up, and now he's gonna start working on the remaining myriad of little problems (brakes, electrical, you can imagine what else - oh, and his trunk hinge just collapsed, leaving half-a bolt stuck in the housing. Wheee!)
Which finally leads to the topic - It sat for so long without running (three months!!) that upon startup, lots of pretty, billowy white smoke comes out of the exhaust. After warming the motor up for a while, it seems to dissipate a bit, but whenever I'd crack the throttle there's still a good amount that fills the garage. And driveway. And street..... When idling however, it's not very noticeable at all, until you goose it.
Hmmm. Could oil have leaked into the HE's (it does seep a small amount) and be burning from inside - it smells oily, and obviously comes from the exhaust tips? OR, could it just be that it needs to be "cleaned out", ie. really driven, in order to blow out any junk that may have settled? It hasn't been on the road in almost 10 years. (Is that possible - I wish it was that simple )
Or, worst case, rings, valve seals/seats? I think I'm betting on this one.
Here's the other angle - He doesn't care what engine is in it, as long as it runs. His 2.0 came out of an ex-Watkins Glen racer, and from what I can tell has been massaged well (although a while ago.) This thing frickin' thumps! I mean, I've never heard anything like it. I don't know what cam, P/C's etc are in it, but it snaps and barks when you get jiggy with the pedal. I drove it for a short bit last year, and was really impressed with it. My point? He said he'd be interested in an even swap for my 1.7 - mine runs smoooooth, barely leaks any oil (it's true), and has a recent re-build. I don't know what his needs - yet. (I'm so devious.....)
What do you all think?
Ciao for Now
Jeff

If the motor was tilted sometime during storage, it might be oil which will eventually burn out.

I'd be tempted to do the swap if the engine sounds healthy. Worst case, You could do new valve guides and pistons/cyls for about $500. There may be some niceties done to a race engine to make it stronger.

few things... oil seeping around the valve guides.

Oil in the heat exchangers

will burn off over time.

Was your engine exposed to water or moisture durring its rest? It may be condensation burning off.
Just my two cents....

My 911 sat in the body shop for 4 mos without being started. Upon starting it for the first time it billowed white smoke so bad you couldn't see the car....after about 10 minutes of idling it got noticeably better and after driving it for about 10 miles went away for good. Horizontal engines with some wear sitting for expanded periods will soak oil into places that it shouldn't be. I'd give it a run for 10+ miles and then see if it goes away.

Ahh, maybe that's all it is, just gotta burn off some wayward 'erl. The car hasn't really been driven in ages, except for around the block once in the summer. Lotsa nit-picky stuff to do before he can really register it and drive 'er though, some electrical probs, e-brakes and cables, throttle cable, to name a few.
I'd rather he get it roadworthy and put miles on it before making any rash decisions, even though I'd be benefitting, immensely. He knows how bad I want that motor, too
