Fuel sender

I have not been able to find a pic of a fuel sender unit with the aluminum cover tube removed. I am trying to see how the slide wires inside are supposed to be and what gauge they might be. I'm attempting a rebuild. All is intact and in great condition except the slide wires. A pic of a fuel sender for a '72 914/4 would be a great help. Anyone? Thanks in advance.

Check page 130 of the Haynes manual.

It figures I don't have the Haynes book. I'm going to get it right now though. Can you post the page here? Thanks

I don't have any pix but did take mine apart and clean the slide wires with steel wool and the sender worked better after that.

The diameter isn't the critical part--it's the resistance that is used.

Dave - good you mentioned that. Those wires are not regular copper but are nichrome resistance wire. The resistance is probably dependent on the wire gauge though. Here's a place that sells nichrome wire http://www.wholesalepartsandfilm.com/wire.asp
Don't know anything about them and if they carry the same size wire as in the sender.
