Rim Question...anybody try later model porsche rims with deeper offsets?

Assuming a 5 bolt conversion, besides the Fuchs...has anybody tried later model porsche rims with the deeper offsets (50+mm) to get more tire under our non-flared fenders? Boxter or 911 rims? If so, post a pic and tell us the rim/tire sizes that worked.

Jim

p.s. I'm moving on in my restoration from mechanicals now to body/rims/flares?...etc.

It doesn't work. 205s are just about the max you can put under stock fenders under any circumstances, though a few lucky souls seem to have found a combination that fits 215s.

Putting the tires on wider wheels will make them wider. This is good for traction, but bad if you have a limited space. 205s on any 7" wide rims are a very iffy thing under stock fenders, I am told. The stock 5.5s narrow the tire a bit so it fits easier.

With 205s on 5.5" wide rims, there isn't a lot of room inboard or outboard. So moving the whole deal inward or outward is not really going to help much in finding more room for tires.

Rich Johnson narrowed his 914's trailing arms and moved the bearing carrier inboard slightly in order to fit 205s (I think) on 7" wide rims under stock fenders. That's a whoooooole lotta work for not a lot of gain. I don't think he would have done that if there was a way to fiddle with the wheel backspacing and fit them without cutting and welding.

They can be made to work, with spacers. But they will likely not let you fit tires wider than 205s under stock fenders.

In doing a search for nice looking 4 bolt wheels....I ran across (sorry, was at AA..I know I know...just doing research!!!) a wheel by Revolution that is stated as 7X17 that will fit a 914 with unaltered fenders...here is the URL:

http://www.***********.com/action.lasso?-database=Items%20database&-layout=web&-response=record_detail.lasso&-recordID=12583858&-search

Any experience with this wheel manufacturer and the fit?

Thanks again all (especially Dave),

Jim

There was a local guy here who was running the 17x7 turbo twist wheels on all four corners with the 4 to 5 lug adapters. I have no idea what size tire he was running other than it was a very low profile. The body on the car was garbage, but the rear did not appear to be rolled. This guy was the type that wasn't sure which end of a hammer to use, so I would be shocked if he had the knowledge or aptitude to roll the rears.

I have been able to fit 15x7 951 phone dials onto a 914. Fronts, no problem; the rear fender lip had to be rolled. 205's fit OK.

Then tried a set of 225x50 Hoosiers. Worked OK, but the rear fenders had to be pulled a good bit.

911 Fuchs 16x6 with 205's seem work well.

For Revolution wheels, see http://www.ttrsracing.com .

Grassroots Motorsports magazine had a series about a Rabbit GTI race car that ran on Revolutions. They had one wheel fail and found a crack in a second, I think. I am not completely certain about the facts in this case, and I don't know how it was resolved. You might check at http://www.grassrootsmotorsports.com and look for their "Zero to Hero" series to see if there is any info there. And ask the Tataloviches as well.

Revolution has been reputable, and the one failure there was pretty disturbing to me...

I have Revolution RFX 6.5 x 15" wheels on my car with 206/60 x 15 Yokos. The backspacing is 5-1/8". Fenders are stock, no pulling or rolling. The rear fit is tight and I don't think a larger tire would fit. The fronts have plenty of room to the outside, but will rub the inner wheel well at full lock (which has never happened in normal driving). These wheels were ordered directly from Revolution when I was working in Germany many years ago. I have not seen this size offered here in the States.

I have been trying to get a set of 4-lug Revolutions that are sized for stock fenders in a 7" width for about a year. The company keeps telling me that they are out of production, but that they will be offered again "soon". I've been hearing that since March so I wouldn't hold my breath. If anyone has any leads on these wheels, please let me know.
As far as fitting wider tires on the back of the car, the best you're going to get is a 205. Almost all of the guys that I've seen with 215's have too much negative camber, or the rear of the car is jacked up so high that the tires don't actually sit under the fenders.

Yea, Porsche seemed to play a cruel joke on us....a stock bodied 914 can accept 8" wide rims with 225's in the front and normally only 7" wide rims with 205's in the rear

I'm running 16x7's with 205/45-16's on all four corners under stock fenders. The only way I could put 225's on is if i pulled out my fenders. My rims have a 40mm offset. The rims I have are for a FWD Honda or VW GTI (same 4x100 bolt pattern)
