Upright cooling system
 

OK, so here I am full of questions, most of which will probably never have anything to do with whatever I end up doing, if I end up doing anything at all. (huh?)
Who runs upright cooling? I hear it was only necessary for big displacement racers, and from what I think Jake says it's not that necessary. So why bother? Will you lose your thermostat and cooling flaps if you do, or do you run a remote oil cooler so you don't even worry? Is it for the sound of the big impeller? Is it because people have nothing else to do with their cashola?

Why don't you just ask Jake? He doesn't bite. From what I remember him sayiing in the past, it's strictly a cooling thing. For racing engines and for the 2270's and larger. I never heard anyone talk about the fan noise being something they wanted special. But, the stock cooling sucks for racing. Ask me how I know.

Some people gotta have the look.

Some people are trying to fit a 914 engine into a much shorter space--the engine bay of a Bug or Ghia, for example.

Some people have big motors that require more cooling air than the stock system delivers. (Most of those that I know of were running large cast-iron cylinders. Supposedly you don't need the extra air if you're using the aluminum ones.)

Some people believe that one or another upright cooling system uses less power to cool the engine the same as the stock system. Less power used to push cooling air == more power to spin the wheels.

And some people have read in the Glossy Car Magazines that "this is the only way to go". (Usually the article is written, directly or indirectly, by someone who is selling conversion setups.)

You do lose your thermostat and all warm-up regulation. (There are mods you can make to one or two of the systems to have a t-stat and some warm-up.) Some setups allow you to keep the stock oil cooler, some force you to rely solely on a remote cooler.

I figure this is like the coil-over conversion for the 914's front end--if you're at the point where it is worth the (very significant) hassle factor and expense, you will already know you absolutely cannot live without it. If you can actually ask the question, "do I need it?" the answer is "nope."

Yeah, I remember Jake saying how well the stock cooling setup works, but I was curious if anyone here was running the upright deal on their cars. I figured it was really only for some high-HP app's.
I'm continually amazed at the bazillion things people do to t-4s, and the knowledge that everyone has about these cars too, sheesh - I'm not worthy!

I have a dual cowling that runs electric fans. Requires the use of a GM alternator that runs backwards. The alt needs to use a marine stye fan to blow air in correctly. Send me an email and I can send some pics. They are posted on the 911 bbs and 914club website if you wanna run a search.

I run a modified T4 motor in a 356. 2.4 with dual webers.

The stock system will work WELL WITH MY 914 COMBOS all the way to 2316cc.... Thats a 180BHP engine.When most guys thinkof upright engines they are thinking of seeing a 911 fan.... WHAT A WASTE OF ENERGY AND MONEY! I have PROVEN that they simply don't work well enough for their cost.

My DTM will now fit into a 914, and sounds very cool....

Keep in mind that the stock engine is the hottest running thing in the world! That cam and set up is a nightmare for cooling!

I too was looking into the 911 fan set up for my 356 and now that I see yours I'd like to know more about it.
Where can I see it?
Why don't you like the 911 style and have you used it your self?

For a 356 you cannot beat my DTM.....slides right in, works and cost HALF as much......Looks factory!

Mike, where did you get that? Looks so dam cool ,i hope it will work with stock Fuel injection.

JAKE YOUR SITE DOES NOT LIST THE 914 PLEASE BRING IT UP TO DATE OR GIVE US THE INFO HERE sorry for the caps but Im building a new motor and would be interested in the DTM

Kit is the same, the difference is the surround tins, which i still need to make some templates of... That will make the kit about 150.00 more than a normal stage III DTM..

she slides right on, with the engine in the car if you want. I have only fitted it to a 73-914 and just had to remove the rain tray from the engine lid.

Frankensteen?


Wait one.....

OK....bear in mind....I have cut the roof off, it NOW has a full cage and it's undergoing a trans rebuild....I have this problem of dumping the clutch after a few beers.....
