Exterior mirror adjustment

Just boughta used exterior mirror. Question: How do you adjust it? It is pointed toward the ground. I thought you could just grab it and twist but it doesn't move.Popped out the mirror and removed the 8mm nut and tension spring and find there is a threaded hex head stud with a triangular plate at the bottom. Do you need to pry this plate off? If removed, will that allow the mirror to be moved, reaimed so I can see the back of the car when sitting in the drivers seat? I didn't thinkj putting on a mirror would be such a PITA. Thanks for the help/responses.

There are two adjustment points on the mirror, the 'body' and the 'elbow' - sorry I don't know the more technical terms. Grasping the body of the mirror you should be able to twist it up or down. Pushing or Pulling the outside of the mirror should give you some lateral adjustment.

Sounds like you have one that's rusted. I've had some that have done the same.

You should be able to back that nut off a lil, maybe lube it?

Lots of good penetrating oil, like Aero Kroyl or PB Blaster. WD-40 is not a penetrating oil. That, and better leverage.

Quick Q regarding the mirror. Whats the best way to pop the glass off? My passenger side mirror is just a drivers side mirror that is spun around, I'd like to get some of that 'ITEMS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR' glass so I can see more than my sail panel.....

A hammer... Or a glass cutter.

Nominally, you are supposed to be able to remove the black plastic part that goes around the glass without breaking it. Plastic which is 25-30 years old, and has probably been sitting outside exposed to the weather for most of that time. So how lucky do you feel??

It is probably easier to break the glass (or cut it) and then fish out the plastic. That is, if you're replacing the glass anyway.

Thanks for the tip... probably a lot easier to get the plastic out once the glass is broken...

Hi Jason, my first teener was a Malaga 75.

If you take a heat gun, and heat it slowly, you can get the retainers out, without destroying anything.

Wasn't that mirror actual silvered glass as opposed to the cheaper process they use today?

When I bought mine, I think it was early 1982, and it looked new, and after having seen some bad ones in the last few years, I'll bet it looks spectacular.

Can't wait!
