Rear lense kit update - anyone?
Dudes:
I've seen some 914s with the reflective lense that fits between the taillights. I think I read that this was an option installed at the dealer. Was this only for 914-6s or could it be mounted on any 914-4? I really like the look of this lens, but didn't know if they were available or how much they cost. Anybody know? I was going to get the silver emblem letters "914 2.0" for my car since it currently only has the black vinyl letters which don't show really well on my black car. I still think this lense deal would look cooler though. has anyone put one of these on their 914? Thanks for any input. Andy...

I don't have one, but know they are sometimes available in the want ads here at PP I believe it would be an easy install. You might have to do a remote trunk realease ,too. You're right, I think a black 914 would be nicely accented by the red strip accross the back. I've always thought they were aftermarket, but i don't have any basis for that. Maybe someone else can tell me if it was a dealer installed piece or diy.

Thanks for the response...
I didn't realize the remote trunk release issue. I don't think I like the idea anymore... I did a search on the other board and it seems this issue is a real pain. Andy...

Just to clarify, the commonly-available reflector is a 911 piece that gets cut down to fit the space on a 914. You have to drill holes to mount it, so going back the other way is a bit of a pain.
There were aftermarket ones specifically made for the 914 way back when, but I think they've been out of production and NLA for a couple of decades. You do need to come up with an alternate way into the rear trunk--a solenoid latch seems to be the most common, but they can have their own problems. A few people take a hole-saw to the reflector to use the stock pushbutton release, and some use cable-actuated releases, like the engine lid. --DD

914 zim ,
I know this is a late reply, justa came across it. I put a reflector on my 73 with the electric release, back in 88'. It works just fine and still does to this day. I bought from a company called Automotion which I think became performance products. maybe they have "new" old stock Dion

They're for 914 owners with an identity crisis.
Oh, and if you're gonna cut down a 911 reflector, it better be an early one as the later one won't fit and there's to much to cut.

When I bought my car it came with the P-O-R-S-C-H-E side stripes and one of the custom-made rear reflectors and it's the first thing I sold. I know what kind of car I have - it's a Volks/Porsche.

The trunk solinoid should cost around $10. I know of a souce for them if you get stuck. As for the "Identity crisis" I like the look of the lense on some cars. I think that it is just cleaner and that is why I bought one. I have to install it still, but it is at the bottom of the list.

I don't think the cut ones look good. The aftermarket ones that fit though - they look nice.
I have sold both. =-) I don't think I'll be putting one on my car.

I have an early rear reflector on eBay as I type. Seems appropo to mention, considering someone looking for one.
