Flywheel Resurfacing
Well I have the engine out for some maintenance, I have decided to replace the clutch.
I will need to get the flywheel resurfaced and I'm wondering if there is anything special that I need to know or can I just bring it to any machine shop & they will know what to do. Any advice would be appreciated..........................Vern |

just ensure that they cut BOTH steps of the flywheel. The lower surface where the disc rids, as wel as the surface where the pressure plate seats. If not the clutch can slip.

I think that after you have the flywheel machined you will have to place a shim between the throw-out arm and the pivot point on the tranny case to maintain the right geometry.

If they have to cut that much to require a shim, get another flywheel.

If the friction surface of the flywheel gets cut too far, the clutch disk will hit the flywheel bolts. It's not the worst idea to have them cut down the center part where the bolts ride, so as to keep the same relationship between the clutch disk and the bolt heads.
Well, until the center part is weakened too much--then it really is the worst idea... --DD

Those are 911 specs (recognize the drawing), but they should still be valid for the 914 flywheel. Thanks for finding the pic, Mark!!

I had a bit removed and it cost me $30. I put a shim under the fork ball thing just as a precaution. Works like a champ.

I had to shave the bolts. About half of the rib around the top of the bolt is mandatory with any machining of the disc surface. I would say that if you have to shave them flat, get another flywheel.
