Hi Jim -
Yep - and I really am 100% sure of it. The only thing ever done to that car was a driverside front fender re-paint to correct some rust around the antenna hole. It was 100% original/stock.

My 1971 914-6 absolutely positively has smooth door panels and smooth inserts for the seats, original. The grain on the '71 vinyl is different (coarser), and in my opinion, uglier, than what they used in 1970.

I have yet to see any 1971 914 with basketweave seat inserts and I am quite positive that basketweave door panels did not come in before the 1972 model year.

Early (70-71) door panels are superior to the later since they had a metal upper piece which would allow you to more easily reupholster the panel with new fiberboard.

I'll see if I can find a picture. I am as sure as death and taxes that dads car was a basketweave car. I spent a pile of time with this new stuff called Armour-all going over that interior nearly every weekend. I know it was a 71... non movable passenger seat and no center dash vent.

No six came with center dash vent, only early four. I certainly can't argue with you since you were there, but basket weave in a '71 would be very unusual. Could the car have been '70 sold and titled as a '71? There were a lot of those. The cars did not sell well and many dealers carried them over. I once had a '70 914-6 that was first sold as a new car in July of '71. It was titled as a '70 however. Only way to know for sure would be by checking the VIN, 9140xxxxxx or 9141xxxxxx.
