Talking New Owner

I am the proud new owner of a 1974 914 2.0, I have been reading the past posts and yu guys have already been alot of help to me just be reading others posts. My new money pit seems to start and run pretty good bur has many electrical issues that I am going to have to weed through. And while it is rust free ( its hard to beleive a 30 year old car is rust free ) the paint is in really bad shape as well as bumber- trim seals - seats ripped.........

My question at the present is that I have found that the wiring between the voltage reg has burned through which seems to have shorted out the volt reg (I have the generator light on the dash glowing red all the time-even when the the key is turned off) I have verified this by unplugging the volt reg and the light goes out. Where can I get a replacement wiring unit for this section. I am afraid to replace the volt reg untill I replace this wiring. I cant find any where around here (Lexington Ky) that has the info to help me either rewire it myself or purchase the part.

Actually, I think that symptom shows a bad alternator, not necessarily a bad regulator. For a very very thorough article about the charging system, see the following:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/914_alternator_troubleshoot/914_alternator_troubleshoot.htm
This, and many others, can be found in the Technical Articles section of this website.

You can get a replacement regulator at, among other places, the sponsor for this very BBS!

The on-line catalog may be found here:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/9144_catalog.htm
For an alternator, check here:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/9144/POR_9144_electr_pg3.htm#item17
For the voltage regulator, here:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/9144/POR_9144_electr_pg4.htm#item23

There are other places to get parts, but when you buy from Pelican it helps to keep this board going!

I wish I had thought to go to the tech articles when I was having my problem. My light would go out above idle but come back on if I used any additional current. Turned out to be a diode failure.

As far as wiring, there are only 4 wires in the alt harness. You should be able to make one up using some new push on connectors, the existing holders and 2 large connectors on the 8 ga. wire. Put some shrink wrap on your work and you're in business.
