Do you have 911 envy?

Well, "everyone" knows that a 911 is the real Porsche, right? Regular americans know, want 'em,and respect 'em. They might not know it is a 911, but they know it is a Porsh (sic). But are 911s really better? I used to think so. Yes, "better" than a 914 because it has more power, more room, more comfort, and just more 'tight'. Well, a Cadillac does, too. But obviously it is a different animal entirely. Is a 911 a step up from the 914? Or is it a different animal, too? Sure it's more similar to a 914 than a Fiat, but Porsche AG chose to abandon this rogue child after the press emphasized it's non-911 characteristics. Do you want to be in the family, or an outsider. I think I like the status of outsider better. Especially when we know what a killer a 914 can really be on the track.

I had a tough time choosing between "styling" and "outcast status". Finally came down on the styling. They are great looking cars, even now thirty years later. Two trunks. No frills. Fun to work on. Uh, wait a minute....

Its cheaper.
AND you ever met a snobby-ass rich guy in a 914?
You have a decent chance of meeting them in 911's, some VERY cool guys in the 911's, but the worst you'll run into when you meet someone who drives a 914 is white-trash.
Seriously!
How you think all these cars got so beat up?
I like the 914 because it is LESS refined, more pure, bare bones.
They out perform 911's if you consider they have 1/2 the power average. Take some weight off a 911 (to match the 914), and give it 105 HP, how would it perform..?
Like a VW beetle.

I have two 911s currently and I ain't no snobby-ass rich guy. I do, however, have 914 envy. I'm looking for a light project car for my son and me now. What do I like about the 914? They look cool, I heard they handle better than 911s (hard to believe), they're underpowered which is good for my kid and it's a no-frills sports car. Pure fun!

You need to include an option for "I sold my 911 for a 914."

How fun the car is is directly proportional to what shape the car is in. A 914 in great shape and a 911 in great shape are both a blast. They are also very different. Both though are fun. I've driven and worked on 911's but never owned one. However, I still prefer my 914 over the 911 (so does my wallet).

The 914 is a bastard child and Porsche is a dead beat dad. As back pay for child support I say we all receive, and factory installed, 6 cyl (or Jake Raby engine of your choice), new longs, battery trays, all the other stuff... Provide a decree and new verbage that Porsche 914's are now soley 914's, a badge amongst themselves.

As for the 911 (older ones, I could care less for the newer ones), I think it is THE most sexy car ever made. I have never driven one or even been in one but man I love them.

My 914 is my 914 bought and payed for. I like the fact that we tussle over everything. I love the fact she is a love child between VW and Porsche. I love the fact that that you don't see too many around. I love the fact that... What was the Question? Was this a poll?

I will stop now, man, i did'nt need that last beer!!

Cheers!!

I love 'em both... along with all the PORSCHES ... even the front-engined, water-cooled cars! If I HAVE to choose... the 914, because it's mine... if I had a 911, I might feel different, but even more torn! I think I grew up Idolizing the 911... it was my favorite Hot wheel as a kid, my favorite model and electric track car, and favorite to see on TV win races... but that said, the 911 could never live up to my expectations, either b/c I'm not talented enough as a driver, or b/c I held it in such high regard... I could only be disapointed... the 914 however, surprises me and excites me every day, even when it's not being driven. in the future I may or may not get a 911, but I will always have a 914!

Hey! What's wrong with having one of each?

911's sound good, I can hear one from block away & can always recognize one.

I love my 914, but someday.....I will have both.

I like both. I could afford a 911 of pretty much any vintage, if I decided I needed one. But I have a 914.

...Does that answer the question?

I only envy the wonderful Porsche flat-six motor. Maybe one day I'll buy an original 914-6.

Cool Go Dave Go

OK!

I guess I knew it was a rhetorical question all along, I just wanted to hear others say it. I've driven both, and think they are more similar than different. This perspective mostly comes from talking to my brother the 911 owner. He has said that the 914 is a more practical (and lower speed) way to get the same jollies as the 911. I'm waiting for the day the factory gives more than nodding aknowledgement to the 914. I think it will be coming eventually, although I hate to give up that love-child status.

Why buy an a$$-end heavy car that Porsche has spent 50 years and untold amounts of money to make it handle like a mid-engined car.

Need the sound of a sixer - use headphones and a recorder - it's much much cheaper.

Now, anybody got a running 908 engine in their garage they wanta gid rid of cheap?

Scott: Yes I do. Every time I see a nice 911 between a 73 and 78 I cant think of it as anything but a parts car. Like those wheels and the motor, want that SC suspension.

I lose the 911 envy everytime I go to the track...... I have the best of both worlds with my 912E, my favorite engine and a 911 S body.... And a lighter car than a 911 to boot!

I like 'em both. I've had three 911's over the years but have always wanted a 914 since I've heard so much about the handling and love the retro lines. Now I'm looking forward to putting my "new" 914 through its paces!

I was reading in Road and track about 91-98 911 turbo owners saying how much they loved their cars and how it just turned 8,000 miles. How can they do that?
