altenator woes, HELP!

I now a have a running idling 2056 in my car!!

I had an issue today though... I wired everything up... but some how something happened...

I had put a new altenator on, but used the harness from one of my other altenators... I don't know if I hooked the big red wire up to the wrong pole (both poles are marked B+, but 1 is marked with 2 "B+"s)... I initialy used the pole with only 1 B+, I wired this to the starter, the same place as the battery is wired... when the car ran for a second or 2 though... that wire started smoking... we killed the engine, and checked everything out... only that wire was hurt...

I assumed I put the wire on the wrong pole, so I pulled the altenator, used the other harness, and put it on the other pole, wired everything up... but, when I went to put the terminal back on the battery, there was a spark... not wanting to burn up the other wire I unhooked it...

now, WTF do I do to get this right? does the big wire NOT go to the same pole on the starter as the battery (+)? is the pole on the altenator with 2 B+s the right one(that's the one it's on now)? did my inital wiring mistake(?) kill this altenator? could this be the cause of my other electical issues(see other THREAD)
