QUick ball joint question
 

im looking at my old ball joints on my 72, and at the "new" 911 struts I'm putting on, and i want to make sure i got this right before i order ball joints. the strut assembly dictates the ball joint used. if it is the split clamp it is the older style, and if the strut bottom end is a non split, through hole it uses the newer style..... CORRECT?????
Also, is there a cotter pin on the big castellated nut under the ball joint? ( I think I see! a cotter holds the lock plate on, right!?)

also are the 911 and the 914 the same? I was told the strut assembly was from a 1971 911T.

The strut assemblies are different. The control arms are the same except some have larger torsion bars. The steering rack that holds the control arms is the same. The ball joints might be the same but I went with the 911 ball joints just to be sure.

Be sure you use the Ball joints for an EARLY 911.

Yes there is a cotter pin.

You need a special socket to remove and replace the Nut.

There are two types of ball joints. There is one that has a half circle recess for the BOLT that holds it in (early), and then there is one with a split pin (later). Dont buy the tool to remove your castellated nut, its junk and will round the first time you use it. I use a cheaper and more sturdy pipe wrench actually and it has been working great for me. The easiest way to tell what kind of ball joint to order is to look at the fastener that attaches it to the strut assemblie. If you see a bolt head on one end and a nut on the other it is early, if you see a nut on one end and a plug on the other it is late.
